Last week, NATURE MAGAZINE published an article about Coyotes and how it has spread into the Eastern USA...........Our friend, biologist Roland Kays was quoted as saying: "coyotes have not made a significant dent in the northeast's deer population".... "Coyotes fill part of the empty niche, but they don't completely replace wolves".......It is true that Coyotes do not make a serious dent on adult deer but as we have discussed on this blog previously, there is a study in South Carolina that has concluded that Coyotes are responsible for 33-80% of fawn deaths in the state.............and where clearcutting and roads are rampant as in Grapesie National Park in Quebec, Canada, Coyotes are taking Caribou fawns as well...........Yet in very high deer density regions like Pennsylvania and West Virginia(20 or more deer per sq mile),,,,,,deer herds are not being impacted by what the Nez Perce first nations call the worlds most impactful creature; THE COYOTE----(Near the dawn of time, the story goes, Coyote saved the creatures of Earth...... According to the mythology of Idaho's Nez Perce people, the monster Kamiah had stalked into the region and was gobbling up the animals one by one...... The crafty Coyote evaded Kamiah but didn't want to lose his friends, so he let himself be swallowed...... From inside the beast, Coyote severed Kamiah's heart and freed his fellow animals...... Then he chopped up Kamiah and threw the pieces to the winds, where they gave birth to the peoples of the planet)-----If every one of our carnivores was a adaptable as the Coyote, the word "extinction" might not be part of our vocabulary!
