In 1994, Evolutionary Biologist Kurt Scwenk' and PHD Candidate William Ryerson's research revealed that "snakes’ tongues do not have taste receptors, rather they are used for a type of three-dimensional smelling"............."The forked tongue allows snakes to sample air molecules from two different points, and this information is delivered to two separate organs in the roof of the mouth"................ The dual signals help snakes determine the direction that a scent is coming from"............."By flicking their tongues, snakes increase the tongue’s exposure to air molecules, and therefore, its potential acuity of smell"............ "This enables the snake to gather information 100 times faster than if it simply extends its tongue downward to touch the ground"

NORTHERN WOODLANDS MAGAZINE Editor Dave Mance describes the interesting mating and nesting paradigm of our Wild Turkey.........April is the "on-line" dating month in the northeast with the Male Gobbler seeking to round up a harem of females who he impregnates and then leaves them to incubate their clutch of eggs over a 30 day incubation period in May...............After the chicks hatch, mother hens go off and hang out together with their chicks, with males seeking their own location where they hang out together and females who did not breed carving out a third location where they go and hang out together..........This interesting "population segregation" paradigm works so well that our native Turkey has rebounded from near extinction in 1900 to "standing tall" today at some 7 million birds

Georgia Ecological Research Center and University of Georgia researchers conducted a 5 year 2007-2012 study of the dietary habits of Coyotes in the Joseph Jones Research Center in southwestern Georgia.............The ever adaptable Coyote, like Man, opportunistic and flexible in it's foodstuff choices, dining on everything from rodents, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, bobcats, gray foxes, skunks, various birds, vegetation, agricultural crops and human garbage ...........How much direct predation on deer and other larger mammals was not directly observed and the authors of the study used language that came across to me as biased and anti-coyote, reaching a verdict of guilty rather than suggesting more research was needed to evaluate the "dampening" potential when Coyotes and Deer exist together in Georgia woodlands

the Saskatchewan(Western Canada) Farmland Moose Project, has discovered that Moose are finding ways to carve a living in habitat with less than 1% forest cover in the southern portion of this Province..................."Animals are taking advantage of the area's "knob and kettle" land forms, rolling hills with plentiful tree-ringed sloughs and wetlands".................... "During the heat of the summer days -- "hot" for a moose being above 14 C -- the animals retreat to shade and water, coming out to feed once it cools off"................While true that predators like Bears and Wolves are not present in Saskatchewan farmlands, it is interesting that Tic infestations, Deer brainworm and hotter temperatures do not yet appear to be dampening agents as they are in nearby Minnesota and other Moose habitat across North America
