Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Subject: Carnivore Way road trip!

Dear Rick,

I am writing to let you know that I am leaving this week on a month-long 6,000 mile road trip to write my next book, "The Carnivore Way: A Transboundary Conservation Vision for a Changing World." This book is forthcoming from Island Press in 2013. In it I am writing about the ecology, conservation status, and public policy of 6 large carnivore species in the West (grizzly bear, wolf, cougar, wolverine, lynx, and jaguar). The theme of the importance of habitat connectivity runs through the whole book (hence the road trip!)

I will be writing as I go, and will be spending time in Banff, Jasper, Denali, Katmai, Wrangell/St. Elias, and Kluane National Parks. I will also be spending time in the communities that link these parks, exploring the human dimensions of carnivore conservation. This fall I will be writing a portion of my book in Yellowstone National Park. I will be creating blog posts for Island Press (Field Notes) along my route. I should be able to share these with you as well, for your blog, if you find them useful to post.

I hope you are having a great summer. Thanks for all you do to advance awareness of large carnivore conservation.

All best,

Cristina Eisenberg
