56 years of killing as many rattlesnakes as possible is what Sweetwater, Texas residents brags about annually..................So disappointing that we as a member of Earths "society of animals" still walk around with the attitude toward creatures we deem unworthy saying "the only good snake, is a dead one"---------------------'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated" ------Mahatma Gandhi' (1869-1948. Spiritual leader of India) ........................Ghandi-like we most certainly are not!!!!!!

Rattlesnake

 Roundup

 Celebrates

 Last Day

with Big

 Numbers

The World's Largest Rattlesnake
 Roundup in Sweetwater ended
their 56th year with big numbers.

Overall, the roundup collected
a total of 3,890 lbs worth of snakes
, according to the Sweetwater
Chamber of Commerce. Sweetwater
 Jaycee member Louis Torres says
they've collected more than last year.
On Sunday, the longest snake recorded
was 76 inches, turned in by Kat McIntyre.

The first place for the heaviest was
given to Andy Lee whose snake weighed
up to 681 lbs. The second place sat at 592 lbs.

The roundup has become a huge economic
boost for the city. Thousands gathered inside the
Nolan County Coliseum since Friday not only
from the Big Country, but as far as Japan.

"I think it's awesome to see how many things
you can make out of snakes," Natalia Reynaga
, first-time attendee from California said
. "My husband hates snakes but I forced him to come
so I can see what it's all about."

Reynaga's husband also took part in the
fried rattlesnake-eating contest. Almost a dozen
participants joined the contest to determine
who can eat the most rattlesnakes in one minute
. At the end, the trophy was awarded to Tonya Osteen.

"I think this is awesome," says Osteen. "I think
I'll my trophy above my fireplace."
