Our good friend, Massachusetts Coyote biologist Jon Way, recently posted on his great EASTERN COYOTE RESEARCH BLOG(www.easterncoyoteresearch.com) Government census data showing that in 2011 there were 71.8 million Americans who were wildlife watchers,,,,,,,,,,,,,These "watchers" spent 54.9$ billion to gear themselves up and travel to their favorite outdoor locales to indulge in their passion...............In the same year, 37.4 million Americans either hunted or fished as a hobby experience.............These folks spent $89.8 billion on their gun, rod and travel related activity to indulge in their passion....................So here are the facts State Wildlife Agencies,,,,,,,,,,,,17% of our population hunt and fish,,,,,,,,,,They spend a lot of money doing so and as of the moment, are the folks who fund our state Game Agencies..........This process drowns out wildlife science as a management paradigm and instead focuses in only on optimizing the species that hunters shoot and trap, primarily hoofed browsers(elk, deer, moose)..................Conversely, 33% of USA residents watch wildlife and are not "watching their nickels" while doing so........., Yet for all intent and purpose, these non hunter wildlife participants are shut out of influencing how our wildlife is managed because they do not buy hunter licenses...............Hunters should have a voice, but not be dictating policy on how both hoofed browsers and carnivores are managed...............Wildlife Science should be the "helmsman" in regard to all wildlife management practices............While in my opinion none of us own wildlife, we do have a historical trust that states that wildlife will be managed by the people,,,,,,,,,,,,all the people!!!!!!

National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, & Wildlife-Associated Recreation (FHWAR)

The reports and microdata presented here provide information on individuals involved in fishing, hunting, and other wildlife-associated recreation, such as wildlife observation, photography, and feeding. Data include state in which these activities occurred; number of trips taken; days of participation; and expenditures for food, lodging, transportation, and equipment. The survey was conducted by the Census Bureau for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The statistical testing of the reports was conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
