Biologists Richard Thiel and Adrian Wydeven of Wisconsin wrote a 2011 peer reviewed assessment of the potential for wolf restoration in the eastern usa(New England and NY State)..............Sourcing all available studies on Eastern Wolf(Canis lycaon) rewilding published since the late 1990's and early 2000's , the consensus suggests that based on prey availability, road and human population density, Maine could support close to 1200 Wolves with New Hampshire and Vermont providing homes to anywhere from 50 to 168 Wolves each,,,,,,,,,,,,,Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island likely not able to harbor a reproducing population and NY State(Adirondacks and perhaps Catskills) able to create a permanent home for somewhere between 330 and 460 lobos..................It's all about political will, and creating the land corridors between sizeable protected zones(e.g. Algonquin to Adirondacks and Maine Woods down through New Hampshire connected to Vermont and Adirondacks...........Would there be Eastern Coyote/Eastern Wolf hybridization?................As demonstrated in Algonquin Provincial Park in Eastern Canada, a sizeable enough Eastern Wolf population appears to be able to not be overrun by Coyotes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,And should there be that hybridization, then the ever larger hybrids would also be able to fulfill "wolf ecological functions of keeping Deer in some type equiblibrium................Your thoughts on this topic?
