Continued discussion, collaboration and studies are leading the people of the Katahdin region of Maine to recognize that Forestry will likely never again bring full employment to the region..........As a result, the vision of a Maine Woods National Park first proposed by the environmental advocacy Group, RESTORE(THE NORTH WOODS) and championed strongly by the Quimby family's willingness to donate 100,000 acres of open space to the proposed Park is starting to get some warmth by Maine's Senators and Representatives in D.C..................The proposal now calls for a 75,000-acre national park between Baxter State Park and the East Branch of the Penobscot River. On the other side of the river, there would be a 75,000-acre recreation area. The park would be open to fishing, hiking and paddling while the recreation area would allow snowmobiling and hunting, too......
