The Michigan newspapers would do their readers a good service if they put a bit more homework into their Deer kill articles.............Instead of just telling us that cold and snowy winters over the past 3 years have brought down the "kill totals" to about 330,000(down 15% from year ago totals), they should reference the fact that in the 1970's annual deer kill in Michigan averaged about 100,000 annually(Michigan DNR source),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,With the estimate that hunters took about 20 to 30% of the herd in that decade, roughly 350-500,000 deer roamed Michigan's woods then,,,,,,,,,,,without any Wolves chasing them.................Statewide density of deer back then likely was in the 10-20 per square mile range, well north of the pre colonial 6 to 12 per square mile figure that encouraged optimum regeneration of plant life in this state...............Deer kills peaked to 400-450,000 in the 1990's,,,,,stretching into the first half of the 2000's,,,,,,,,,,with a likely statewide population of some 1.4 to 2.0 million "Bambi's chewing up Michigan's woodlands,,............A likely deer density of 20-40 per square mile across the state..........And this population frenzy happening with a couple of hundred wolves back in the state pursuing them................So the fact that the deer kill is down to 329,000 due to the tough winters, this state still has some 1.3 million deer with densities well above optimum forest regeneration levels at play in the wild..............Michigan Media, STOP REPORTING DOOM AND GLOOM FOR MICHIGAN DEER!!!!
