With the USFW Service in a complete retreat on Wolf and Puma re-introduction east of the Mississippi, it is up to the States to have the wisdom and resolve to place trophic carnivores back into our woodlands and meadows...........New York State's PROTECT THE ADIRONDACKS is pushing the Dept. of Conservation to update it's WILDLIFE ACTION PLAN to include these necessary overseers of terrestrial ecosystems........The DEC continually cops out on Wolf and Puma restoration with the "passive/aggressive" commentary that they only review "action plans" for species currently residing in the state and not extirpated species, even if they occupied every nook and cranny as recently as the late 19th century..........You can still enter your comments on this absurdity and put your "vote" in for Wolves and Cougars by contacting the State Dept. of Conservation through Friday of this week

 — A wilderness preservation group is calling on
New York state officials to study the reintroduction of
wolves and cougars to the Adirondacks.
The group Protect the Adirondacks says the state's
 updated Wildlife Action Plan contains
no mention of possible reintroduction of the big
 predators. The federally mandated action
plan, updated every 10 years, guides state
management of species and habitats.

Public comments are being accepted on New York's plan
until Friday. The plan drafted
by the Department of Environmental Conservation
includes assessments for 597 species,
identifying population trends and threats.
A DEC spokesman says Wednesday that the action plan
 focuses on species that currently
have populations in New York state. There hasn't
been a resident population of wolves or
cougars in New York for 150 years.
