All of us Baby Boomers can remember when the "Environment" was not a "hot potato" partisan issue,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,In the 1960's, Democrat Lyndon Johnson passed the Wilderness Act with near unanimous Congressional approval,,,,,,,,,,,,,In the early 70's Republican Richard Nixon ushered in the Clean Air and Water Acts, again with overwhelming bi-partisan support................In fact, as we have periodically written about on this blog, Republican Teddy Roosevelt is in fact the all-time Environmental President, responsible for the creation of National Parks and creating more protected open space than any other President!.................The Republican President cited as "one of the greatest" in our Country's history, Ronald Reagan, was in fact as good an open space and environmental proponent when Governor of California..............It was not until he got to the White House and brought in and supported the regressive environmental degrading policies of his Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, did his "curtain" come down hard against nature...................No matter how the article below trys to spin it, those of us who grew up during his 8 years in office saw Reagan, The Ranch owning outdoorsman, catering exclusively to the pro business interests that supported him for Office..........In fact, Reagan went to the "dark side" in an all out assault on our nations national heritage.........................Yet to be fair, as previously cited, as Governor of California, it was Reagan that initiated the ban on hunting Pumas, set aside more California open space than any other Governor, fought smog, blocked new dams and protected wilderness from road building projects...............Perhaps some of the early Reagan "common sense" can once again return to our political scene if the Republican whose sons hunt and respect the land(Trump) takes us back to an era of constructive dialog regarding environmental protection...........Your thoughts?....

Ronald Reagan and the Environment
