Prior to European colonization, the Santa Monica Mountains in Greater Los Angeles was home to as high a density of Grizzly Bears as any region in the USA............., Black Bears became a brief and minor part of the regions fauna in the late 19th century post extirpation of the Griz, disappearing from SoCal at the thurn of the 20th Century...........So it is heartening to see over the last 9 years since 2006, a few Black Bears actually attempt to migrate into the Santa Monica's from the adjacent San Gabriel and San Susana Mountains into SoCal .......And now, a Park trail camera is revealing a Black Bear in the Malibu State Park adjacent to Malibu Canyon Road, just a few miles from where I live................The Bear had to traverse the deadly 118 and 101 Freeways, with there better than an even chance that it crossed the 101 Freeway at the Liberty Canyon Exit, the proposed site of a Wildlife Overpass being considered for finished construction by 2020 if funds are secured by Caltrans, the California Highway Commission............It is at this juncture on the 101 where open space exists on both sides of the highway, a linkage point that allows for wildlife to move from the Pacific Ocean eastward into the San Gariel's...........Take a look at the local CBS TV station reporting on the pictures snapped of this Bear by clicking on the link below
