There are only 14 Red Wolves in the wild in the USA, all of them on the barrier islands of North Carolina.............The Center For Biological Diversity research reveals that locales in Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida along with North Carolina are sites for Red Wolf re-introduction............ This wolf once lived across the Southeast and Midwest from Texas up through parts of New York and likely further north into the Algonquin Park region in Ontario, Canada............A key factor in the demise of this species(along with habitat degradation and us humans killing them off) – the tendency of red wolves to breed with coyotes...............It is believed that the Red Wolf’s ancient ancestor was a Coyote/Wolf type canid, therefore easily allowing western coyotes migrating east to breed and hybridize with the rapid dwindling red wolf population
