In the Pennsylvania Game News Article attached, Roland Kays further discusses the differences between our Western Coyote(25 to 30 pounds............. primarily a consumer of rodents, rabbits and fruit........usually an occupier of open country........not sexually dimorphic(males and females usually of similar size) and our Eastern Coyote(coywolf)--(35-40 pounds with some checking in at 50 pounds.................an occupier of all types of forest cover as well as fields................a consumer of deer as well as rodents and rabbits................sexually dimorphic(males larger than females).
Kays genetic testing revealing that Western Coyotes hybridized with Eastern Wolves in Minnesotta and Canada with several female hybrids successfully fording the St Lawrence River and making there way into New York State where they subsequently have mated with Western Coyotes and other hybrids to the point where about 20% of the Coyote population in New England, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey have the type of DNA typical of Wolves from Eastern Canada and the Great Lake States.
An easy-to-read and very informative addition to our Eastern Coyote data base.
