Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Three fantastic new books that I highly recommend that you invest in.....................John and Mary Theberge's
THE PTARMIGAN'S DILEMMA which focuses on how life is constantly adapting and taking on new forms................with some very revealing information on Epigenetics--how environmental influences can permanently alter genes...............and perhaps why the Eastern Wolf might be both Western Wolf(C.lupus) as well as it's own species(C.lycaon)............Fascinating reading indeed!

Veteran and distinguished Field Biologists John Terborgh and James Estes mine into Predator and Prey dynamics in their TROPHIC CASCADES................ how top down influences on the environment combine with bottom up influences to shape ecosytems and the suite of living creatures that occupy them..................

Cristina Eisenberg who has been working fervently in Colorado on a working ranch documenting what very well might be the first wolf pack in The Centennial State in over a 100 years provides us with another perspective on keystone predators and their dramatic influence on regulating ecosystems in her teriffic new book, THE WOLF'S TOOTH.

These three volumes are indeed illuminating, riveting and expansive in their revelation on the web of life on our planet. I am happy to have Cristina and John and Mary Theberge as new friends and hope to interact with John Terborgh and James Estes on this blog in the near future.................ALL THREE VOLUMES AVAILABLE THROUGH AMAZON AND BARNES & NOBLE ONLINE....................ENJOY THEM AS I HAVE!!!!!!
