Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Male and Female humans are predators just like our fellow Earth travelers...........the Wolf, Cougar, Bear, Coyote, etc

A Month or so back, the Sunday New York Times Magazine had a very thoughtful and optimistic article reviewing how cattle farmers in New England and the Mid-Atlantic might rejuvenate their business through the innovation of the "slaughterhouse on Wheels".......................thats right, a family business has been born where instead of the farmer having to go to the expense of getting his cattle to the slaughter house in some distant city, the slaughterhouse drives right up to individual farms and butchers meat on location...................
This fascinating article lit up my "bulb" and made me reflect on how our species is the true omnivore.............like the Coyote, able to dine on both meat, fruit and vegetable.....................

We do not blink(nor should we) at having a fine steak, chicken, fish or lamb dinner.......................all requiring killing our "prey" so that we can survive, reproduce and live to see another day.............

The same way that all predators go about their days..........................Long live the Predator......us humans, coyotes, wolves, bears, cougars, jaguars, wolverines, foxes, martens and fishers.........all of us.killing to eat and to prosper................We have to learn not to be nauseated by this thought..........not to condem our fellow predators for doing what they need to do to survive.............. the very thing that we do..................
