Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions,bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Ban Deadly Poisons
Protect Wildlife and Our Environment

Dear Rick,

As citizens concerned for the welfare of our wildlife and for the health of our environment, we have a big opportunity to make a huge difference.

Representatives DeFazio (OR) and Campbell (CA) recently introduced H.R. 5643 - The Compound 1080 and Sodium Cyanide Elimination Act. This federal bill would ban two of the most deadly poisons used to kill coyotes and other wildlife on
America's ranch lands. Your voice can help make this legislation the law.

In 2008, nearly 13,000 animals suffered a merciless death from these poisons, and sensitive habitats were laced with lethal toxins.

Sodium fluoroacetate, also known as Compound 1080, is one of the most deadly poisons on earth, and is commonly used in livestock collars. These rubber bladders are placed around the necks of sheep and goats to poison predators. However, the pouches are frequently punctured by vegetation and barbed wire, leaking the poison - which has no antidote - into the environment.

VR_Coyote 36-John Harrison.jpgSodium cyanide M-44 "coyote getters" are ground-based poison ejector devices that are baited to attract and kill predators such as coyotes. However, they are non-selective and kill non-target wild animals, family pets, and have seriously injured people.

Used primarily by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services program, these deadly poisons have killed or injured many native animals including federally protected birds and gray wolves...and even people.

Wildlife Services is an innocent name for an agency whose policies are primarily about killing wildlife for private livestock operators at taxpayer expense. Over 120,000 native carnivores are killed every year by USDA Wildlife Services (~90,000 are coyotes) and we now have the opportunity to save some of them from an inhumane and prolonged death by deadly poisons.

Because of the animal cruelty and environmental danger associated with these poisons both were banned by ballot initiatives in
California and Washington. Let's carry this momentum forward and ban these deadly poisons nationwide.

Your elected Representative may not be aware that the use of these poisons is more than a wildlife or environmental issue. Consider that after 9/11 the FBI listed Compound 1080 as a "highly toxic pesticide judged most likely to be used by terrorists or for malicious intent". In addition, the Office of the inspector General reports of Wildlife Services revealed that there is "an alarming lack of inventory control and unrestricted access by unauthorized people".

Please urge your Representative to co-sponsor and support H.R. 5643 - The Compound 1080 and Sodium Cyanide Elimination Act.

Points to Include in a letter or e-mail:

  • Compound 1080 and M-44's are extremely dangerous and inhumane; death by 1080 is prolonged and excruciating;
  • Compound 1080 is one of the deadliest poisons on earth and has no antidote;
  • Livestock collars containing 1080 are often punctured on barbed wire and vegetation, spilling toxins into the environment;
  • Since only 10% of the intentionally poisoned animal remains are every found, the other 90% poison scavengers, including federally protected species and pets;
  • Compound 1080 is odorless, colorless and tasteless and is a threat to human water and food supplies. According to its own records Wildlife Services cannot account for all the 1080 it uses;
  • In addition to the toll on wildlife, both poisons put public safety at risk. Both pets and people have been killed and/or severely injured by accidentally triggering M-44s;
  • Rather than killing predators, ranchers should make better use of good animal husbandry practices such as guard animals, sound and light devices and appropriate fencing;
  • Scientific research shows that it makes more economic sense to implement long-term deterrents rather than killing coyotes and other predators year after year.

Thank you for helping to end senseless poisoning of our wildlife and environment!

P.S. We have a huge opportunity to make a difference, and every voice matters. Please take action TODAY!

Ban senseless poisoning of coyotes and other wildlife...

PLEASE HELP TODAY

Deadly poisons kill thousands of animals - including coyotes, wolves, bobcats, bears and foxes - every year on our public lands.

~ Federal agents with USDA Wildlife Services use Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide M-44 "coyote getters" routinely

~ These dangerous poisons are used in both public and private lands, including our National forests

~ Wildlife Services, a government program, acts at the behest of powerful agribusiness, but it's funded by U.S. taxpayers

Help ban these toxic poisons by supporting H.R. 5643 ~ The Compound 1080 and Sodium Cyanide Elimination Act.
