Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Nicole...............teriffic that you checked in with me...................Would be happy to participate on a call with the folks you mention below.............................the core focus of my blog is providing information and commentary on the suite of native predators and prey that inhabited the Americas circa AD 1500 ..................just prior to European colonization......................with the idea of creating a forum that leads layman and professional alike to strive to re-wild the Americas with that suite of wildlife.  I take tangents here and there but all of it eventually leads back to the land..................if the land is healthy...................if we keep enough of it open and free from development, then hopefully the remnant populations of fauna will spread out, be fruitful and multiply.

Updates on Mexican and all Wolf species are always welcome.........................

Please let me know what you have in mind...................what, where and when.....................I do travel 50% of the year for my job so a weekend call would be optimum.....................Let me know and thanks.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for writing about the Mexican Wolf—it's great to see more people tracking the plight of this lesser known species!  I follow a lot of different wolf and wildlife blogs to keep an eye on this topic (part of my job is to help conservation groups get their issues in front of people who care, and wolves are a big focus of mine), and have been thinking perhaps there's a way for us all to work together more effectively.  It looks from your page like you hold down a (high powered!) day job, and write about wolves and other predators in your spare time, so hopefully better coordination would make maintaining your blog easier!  I'd love for you to join a call with a couple other wildlife bloggers and some wolf advocates, including long-time activist Jean Ossorio and former FWS wolf program manager Dave Parsons.  Jean and Dave will provide an update on the year ahead, and then we'll all brainstorm ways to share resources and raise awareness.  Some questions to consider:

  • What kinds of content interests your readers most?
  • Are most of your site visitors looking for ways to get involved, or just for information?
  • Would you like to receive updates on Mexican Wolves?  How often and in what format?
  • Is there a way we can make www.mexicanwolves.org more engaging?
  • Are there tools we should be providing for activists and bloggers to help make their jobs easier?

Please let me know if you'd consider joining a call between August 25 and September 2, and what time of day is typically best for you.

Thanks for your time!

Nicole
