Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Time to take a pause and reduce the hysteria that is cropping up in the Suburban East, the Ranch environment of the West and the farm/mixed Forest Midwest as it relates to wolves and coyotes attempting to enlargen their geographic habitat and population

Back in 2007 and well before the advent of this Blog, I was communicating with Jon Way, Stan Gehrt, Michael Kellett, David Foster, Conrad Reining and others involved in land preservation and Eastern Coyote biology........................In my Calabasas, California(suburb of Los Angeles) neighborhood, coyotes, bobcats and the very occasional cougar made their presence felt.
With Garbage cans unlidded and on the Street the night prior to pickup................with birdfeeders, cat and dog food food many times in backyards....................with pools and birdbaths part of outdoor decoration and living.....................Coyotes became more and more emboldened and started killing unattended small dogs and cats........................appearing often during daytime hours while kids were outside coming and going from school.
While Los Angeles Officialdom  does not seek to kill coyotes every time people complain about their presence, if enough folks in a given locale keep calling FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICES..............they will send out folks to trap the Coyotes.
This started to occur in my neighborhood and I wrote the attached letter to my Community Board and also stuffed a copy in every mailbox in the 300+ home enclave that I call home.
Have a look...........nothing that any coyote biologist does not know....................but a good amount of data that the average citizen should keep in mind when the call goes out(as it has in Westchester County, NY this Summer) to "DO SOMETHING ABOUT THOSE COYOTES"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
