Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions,bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. Florida panther killed on US-41 in Collier County

COLLIER COUNTY: A Florida panther was struck and killed by a vehicle on US-41 in Collier County Friday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The 3-year-old female panther was found dead on US-41 about two miles east of Monroe Station.

This is the twelfth panther killed in a vehicle collision in 2010 and fifteenth panther death overall, according to the FWC.--15% of the total population in Florida..............too many for this minescule population!!--blogger Rick

The carcass will be taken to the FWC Wildlife Research Lab in Gainesville for a necropsy.
