Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Another beaver makes The Bronx River in New York City it's home - doubles the beaver population to two individuals pioneering back to health what was 30 years ago a cesspool!!!!

Historically, one of the first and most badly polluted Rivers in the USA, the Bronx River in New York City is slowly on the mend and now calling itself home to two Beavers--the first time in 200 years that this waterway is hospitable enough to host Beavers.

Three years ago, the first beaver was spotted in the River and now a companion/mate/associate(no one knows quite yet) is at his(her side)....................fantastic that this River has healed enough to invite the Beavers in.
The Beaver is on New York State's flag and Seal................As we all know, tens of thousands were killed for their pelts upon the Dutch founding of New Amsterdam(New York) in the early 1600's. By 1800, extirpated from the State...................and now with some luck, a breeding pair to re-stock the watershed in and around Manhattan
