Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Idaho Legislatures seeking to overturn longstanding laws on the books that prevent hunters from using snowmobiles to traverse the backcountry when hunting................The key to a sustainable and long term future for both human hunters and the prey they pursue is quality habitat that allows for our wildlife to "bear fruit and multiply" ...............allowing motorized vehicles into the woods to chase down quarry or to retrieve killed animals encourages slob hunting, destruction of habitat and flys in the face of the American hunting tradition of "FAIR CHASE"................Jim Akenson, long time Oregon wildlife biologist and now Executive Director of BACKCOUNTRY HUNTERS AND ANGLERS.ORG weighs in on this subject in the NEW West article recently published................the link is at the end of the body copy of this post--take a look!

BACKCOUNTRY HUNTERS AND ANGLERS.ORG MISSION STATEMENT
Backcountry Hunters and Anglers share a common bond: A passion for the forests, mountains, prairies and waters that support our chosen way of life. We come from across North America. Some of us are urban, others rural. Some of us use fly-fishing equipment; others cast bait and spinners. Some of us hunt with center-fire rifles and shotguns, others with muzzle-loaders or archery gear. But we all know that our freedom to hunt and fish depend on healthy habitat.

We share a concern that the peace, quiet and freedom that make hunting and fishing special may be lost to the pressures of human population, industry and technology. We come together to protect our outdoor traditions and make sure future generations enjoy the high-quality outdoor experiences we grew up with.

Backcountry Hunters and Anglers is an all-volunteer organization. We believe in keeping public lands healthy and accessible. We believe in managing wildlife as a public trust and all native wildlife as a priceless resource. We believe in protecting the big, natural areas and natural functions that support our hunting and fishing heritage.

Best regards,
