Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Our good friend and frequent contributor, Frank Carbone sent me these pictures from Southeastern New York State where he moved a deer from the roadway where it was killed back into the woods................Keeping the carcass off the road likely saved vultures, hawks, eagles, coyotes, foxes and other predators from the same type collision death.......................the "kill" being scavenged by coyotes and vultures..........................I encourage you to check out Frank's website at http://www.outdoorliaisons.com ............all types of interesting outdoor information as well as consumer protection data for you to download.

Rick,
here's the pics as promised.
they would've been there last nite but windows live mail had a problem with the number of photos.

the following creatures utilize a road-killed deer carcass here - black and turkey vultures, red-tail hawks, coywolves, red and gray fox etc.
carcasses left on and along the road shoulder are a death trap for some of those who feed on them and can't get out of the way.
and the way the country is headed - homo sapiens will be competing for a spot on top of the list again.
peace to all,
, , Frank
ps – the experts say more than 70,000 deer are hit by cars in NYS every year.
this is only my second experiment with road kill here.
