Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Cape Cod, Massachusetts Coywolf(Eastern Coyote) biologist and our friend Jon Way conducted an extensive seven year(2001-2008) study on coyote density increasing as the result of the death of a breeding male in a given territory...................the result being that remnant members of the deceased males family unit and an adjacent territory family unit end up splitting the now fractured(by death) territory in two equal parts...........Each family unit adapting to a smaller "piece of the pie".................resulting in higher densities of coyotes in this particular locale....................Paving the way for even higher densities to come as breeding takes place and additional pups come into the world......................Bottom line is that policies by communities that involve killing coyotes as a means of controlling their populations virtually always leads to even more coyotes occupying a given region...................impossibly costly and inhumane to keep up the culling process ................best to leave the existing 4 to 6 member family units in a given territory intact and learn the rules of co-existance(no feeding of coyotes!)

Subject: Coyote/Coywolf pack density doubling following death

I thought you might be interested in this peer reviewed paper that just came out. Many of us (and others) talk about how it is useless to kill coyotes to kill them, because they just come back in numbers (see
Rye, NY situation). Here is some evidence that it is useless, some of the first quantitative data that I am aware of. It documents a pack doubling in density following a breeding male getting killed.
Enjoy.
