Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

4 for 1 math by the very altruistic(NOT) Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks folks as they enthusiastically kill off 4 of the 6 DIVIDE CREEK Wolf Pack members----Those Wolves crime= 1 calf taken for dinner several weeks back..............Like out of a scene from APOCOLYPSE NOW, the Wolves were gunned out of the sky in typical WILDLIFE SERVICES fashion with the helicopter flying time and fuel paid for by the CB Ranch Owner, Craig Barrett, former Intel Corp. CEO...........Mr. Barrett proudly proclaimed: "We footed the bill for them to fly to fill our wolf quota"..............Once again, I register my upset over the zeal and enthusiasm that Montana, Idaho and Oregon are exhibiting in sinking their Wolf populations to the barest minimum required by law......Again I quote our great Naturalist Aldo Leopold and offer his perspective on this type of wanton slaughter............ "It is a century now since Darwin gave us the first glimpse of the origin of the species. We know now what was unknown to all the preceding caravan of generations......that men are only fellow-voyagers with other creatures in the odyssey of evolution. This new knowledge should have given us, by this time, a sense of kinship with fellow-creatures; a wish to live and let live; a sense of wonder over the magnitude and duration of the biotic enterprise"....................Words so profound, but obviously not understood or adhered to by most of us including, Mr. Barrett and the State Wildlife Agencies in the Northern Rockies

Last 2 Divide Creek wolves killed for depredations on Darby-area ranch
By DAVID ERICKSON
The last two of four Divide Creek pack wolves involved in recent livestock depredations on the CB Ranch in the Sapphire Mountains east of Darby were killed by federal Wildlife Services agents during a helicopter hunt Thursday, according to cattle manager Jeff Snavely.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials had issued a kill permit for up to four wolves from the pack several weeks ago after the death of a calf on the ranch that was determined to have been caused by wolves.
"They removed two wolves today, so we are done with that control action," said FWP wolf management specialist Liz Bradley. "They removed an adult male and a yearling male today, and also radio-collared another yearling male near the ranch. We authorized the removal of four wolves from the pack, so we are done for now unless there are any further problems."

Bradley couldn't give specific details on how the wolves were killed, other than to say it was by federal Wildlife Service agents by helicopter.

Earlier this month, government trappers caught two other wolves in the pack and euthanized them, one of which was wearing a radio collar.
Snavely said the CB Ranch, which is owned by former Intel Corp. CEO Craig Barrett, paid for the helicopter operation. "We footed the bill for them to fly to fill our wolf quota," he said....
