Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Video is on this blog of the gunning of Idaho wolves in the Little Woods area of Idaho............You can contact Blaine County Commissioner, Larry Schoen and IDFG Magic Valley Regional Supervisor Jerome Hansen to urge them both to approach Rancher/Wolf allegations with best science and forensic proof before condeming Wolves to death

    From Lynne Stone, Idaho

"On August 31st, I watched wolves and coyotes being gunned down on John Peavey's Flat Top Ranch by a shooter from a Wildlife Services Super Cub. This obscene butchery has no place in the 21st century. Why did wolves and coyotes suddenly show up at the ranch? What attracted them? A few days before, I was witness to a conversation between Peavey and an IDFG trapper who intended to try and collar a couple of the wolves.

Please contact Blaine County Commissioner Larry Schoen (lschoen@co.blaine.id.us) who has been working with ranchers on proactive, nonlethal methods to keep livestock & predators apart. What occurred on the Flat Top Ranch is a step back a 100 years in time. There needs to be a full investigation of the events. A calf was reportedly killed on Saturday night and Wildlife Services never examined it until Tuesday, Aug 30th. According to the Mt Express, John Peavey also blamed wolves for killing 4 sheep on Monday & Tuesday, but WS said it was coyotes. Coyotes & wolves don't just suddenly all show up at a ranch unless something is enticing them there.

Also, please contact Jerome Hansen, IDFG Magic Valley Regional Supervisor (jerome.hansen@idfg.idaho.gov) (phone 208-324-4359) in Jerome, Idaho & urge him to stop rubber stamping every demand from a rancher or Wildlife Services that wolves be killed. Hansen ordered WS to kill as many wolves as they could find in the Little Wood area - never mind if the wolves were guilty or not of depredating on a calf or lamb. There is NO 3rd party consultation - any livestock that dies can be blamed on wolves (or coyotes) & WS goes to work to justify their Super Cub airplane & a trapper who is camped 24/7 next to Flat Top and another ranch."
