Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Toni Stark opining further on the wolf paranoia that many Intermountain West residents harbor.........Montanans are petioning WILDLIFE AND PARKS to extend the hunting of wolves past Dec 31 and keep the season open until all 220 wolves have been exterminated(220 is the target quota that the commission had established upon taking over mgmt of wolves from the feds)...........Whether it be folks in Montana looking to out the wolf, or our neighbors in Maine looking to "blow up" coyotes, I say that you represent the worst of our Country's characteristics..........200 years ago it was kill the Indians, kill the buffalo, kill the Griz, Kill the wolf, kill the cougar..........and here it is in the computer age and we demonstrate quite vividly that despite our ability to think better than any other creature, we are cold, stone ignorant and no smarter or wiser than the folks who preceeded us over the millenia

You're right, Rick!

Doctored photos of wolves have been circulating around the Bitterroot Valley in Montana for over a year and local residents actually believe this stuff.  There is a big meeting planned on November 10th at the Missoula and Helena offices of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks because hunters want the wolf killing season extended past December 31st.  The rationale they give is that they can not kill the wolves quick enough.  FWP has suggested extending the season until January 31st, but hunters want it extended until all 220 wolves have been killed.  They want it to go into "denning" season so that they can also kill the pups.

The Montana Department of Livestock recently revealed that less than 1% of the 2.9 million livestock found in Montana are killed by wolves.  The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has provided recent statistics showing an increase in elk in Montana from 101,000 animals in 2010 to 150,000 in 2011.

Then why is it necessary to kill the wolves?  The oil companies want the mineral rights on our state and federal lands.  The land developers wand roads and homes in our pristine wilderness.
Representative Denny Rehberg (R.MT) is proposing a bill to access our roadless wilderness in the north by the Canadian Border so Homeland Security can occupy the area and build roads and develop the area.  When the land is stripped of it's timber and minerals, there will be no place for wildlife to go.
Why are people unable to see that this eradication of an entire specie of animal has nothing to do with livestock and elk?  It is to satisfy special interest groups for political and economic gain.
