Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Somewhere between Merrill and Marathon City Wisconsin, a hunter allegedly snapped the pictures below of the 168 pound Wolf that he had just shot.................I just cannot fathom killing such a beautiful animal...........We do not eat wolves, do not use their skins as clothing............To take this type creature from the wild seems more than misguided-----It is just plain wrong!

MOST BIOLOGISTS WILL TELL YOU THAT THE BIGGEST WOLVES IN THE WORLD TOP OFF AT 120-130 POUNDS, BUT SUPPOSEDLY THERE HAVE BEEN SOME DOCUMENTATION OF WOLVES WEIGHING UP TO 175-190 POUNDS .......................................IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THE PICTURES BELOW TRULY DEPICT A 168 POUND WOLF, SUPPOSEDLY KILLED BY THE HUNTER IN THE PICTURE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MARATHON CITY AND MERRILL, WISCONSIN?

Obviously none of you live in wolf country. Have you had your dog killed by a wolf? Your livestock? Probably not. The population is well above endangered. The number reaches past 1000 when in 1999 Wisconsins aim was to maintain 350 wolves in the state.

It's really pathetic that men somehow think it's some great act of bravery or toughness to kill such a powerful and magnificent creature. In reality. it is cowardly. These men would be ripped to shreds if they had to battle these creatures. Instead, they hide from them with their guns and shoot them . I would be embarrassed. It's the opposite of bravery.
