Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

With Fisheries collapsing and becoming virtually non functioning across the globe, fish farming now accounts for 47% of global fish production compared to 9% of the stock in 1980, with salmon farmers representing the fastest-growing segment of the industry...............Global output of aquaculture expanded 12-fold between 1980 and 2010 to 60 million tons, while captured fish intake stabilized at 90 million tons, according to the latest data available from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, which tracks fish production...................The use of antibioitcs and crowded pens create conditions for the spread of disease for farm raised fish as well as creating overly fatty fish, setting up consumers to ingest just the opposite of lean fresh catch fish...........In Norway, the USA, Japan, China and in every farm fish Country, conventional fish farms essentially consist of a floating ring onto which a net is fastened.............. These constructions are placed in fjords or close to the ocean shore, with each net holding hundreds of thousands of fish............... Water flow is more limited in these farms than in the open sea, which can lead to problems such as disease and pollution.................Of course(and unfortunately), it always seems that people are set on technological advances in aquaculture as the answer to "dirty farming" rather than cleaning up our oceans and rivers so that wild fisheries can recover their vibrancy.............Farming, whether on land or in the water has had humanity on a downward slide since it's inception 5000 years ago.........When you grow food rather than hunt it,,,,,you can feed larger and larger human populations that bring a heavier and more damaging footprint to the planet...........Can we ever wean ourselve off this non sustainable "tilling"?
