and strangle them.

The following photograph shows a timber wolf caught

him on the head with an ax. Then says, “Well he’s

expired here. I’ll pick him up on the way back.”
Speak up, call your representatives and let them know
that violence
towards a once endangered species is morally and
wrong.

No doubt snares are a cruel way to go, but if set right, and IF they get an animal around the throat, it at least strangles and dies(usually....) far quicker than if caught in leg-hold jaw traps. If a trapper is horribly slack(as some are--take it from a two-legged wolverine that has raided many a slack-arse trapper's lines and wiped them out! After finding and rescuing animals that had been in traps unattended for DAYS! And finding animals that have starved to death/thirst/died of exposure in poorly tended traplines....)leg-hold traps are FAR worse! Luckily, in my experiences, at least, trapping as a "hobby" has really languished. I do still get into it with people that try to insist such trapping really isn't cruel, and merely "holds" the animal without damage. Of course, if you have any REAL experience with such traps, you know this is bullshit! I get real peeved when people argue that it's not cruel. My questions aren't "is it cruel", but, for each instance, is it NECESSARY? To catch some serious livestock depredators or some such, sometimes it IS the only practical way, but no question it's cruel! I once read about a local court case where animal rights folks(who can be incredibly ignorant, I admit) were trying to get leg-hold traps outlawed. A trapper testified as to how these traps don't cause pain, just hold the animal. To prove his point, he put his finger in a little muskrat-sized trap, which barely pinched him. None of these city folk seemed to think that a rather inappropriate test(and the trappers won that case)--which is equivalent to a big dog getting his nose in a little mousetrap! I say, let him use a SIZE APPROPRIATE trap for such a demonstration--let him stick his foot in a dang BEAR trap, and see if he shrugs that off! Snares, too, may be NECESSARY for some things(they are also used fairly humanely for foot catching animals like bears in field studies), but they are certainly never pleasant for the animal!....L.B.
