Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Our good friend, Massachusetts "Coywolf" (Eastern Coyote) biologist Jon Way and his research partner, Clark University's. William Lynn have been seeking a formal name change for the Coyote that now inhabits the northeastern USA/ southeastern Canada down into the Middle Atlantic States.............Jon and William's premise is that over a 100 year period of time(early 1900's), the animal that now inhabits this part of the world is a proven admix of 60% Western Coyote, 30% Wolf(likely Eastern Wolf majority or entirety) and 10% Domestic Dog..............Bottom line is that successive generations of this animal has reproducing with others of it's same kind over a century..............Therefore, it is high time for it's unique genetic admix composition to be recognized for what it is---a mixed Coyote/Wolf= COYWOLF.....................Read the full peer reviewed article by clicking on the link below................Note that there are any number of Jon's esteemed peers who continue to believe that Eastern Coyote is in fact the proper designation for this eastern Canid.............Time will tell on which nomenclature prevails for the truly adaptable and thriving Coywolf/Eastern Coyote
