Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

The Obama Administrationrf trys so hard to be politically correct when in truth, they should just do the right thing rather then what they did with yesterdays "mixed message" as it relates to the future of Red Wolf restoration in the eastern USA............ "The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has for now decided that it will confine red wolf recovery to just federal lands in Dare County(North Carolina)"..........."Simultaneously, it will identify new(federal) sites for wolf introductions and double the number of captive-breeding pairs(in "wildlife zoos, not in the wild)"................ "The long-delayed announcement comes after the agency announced back in June 2015 that it was suspending red wolf reintroductions into the wild while it re-evaluated the feasibility of the recovery program"...............Whether it be in the West with wide swaths of Federally owned land or in the East with just "patches" of Public wildland, you have to allow for wild animals to wander, not artificially pen them in to "zoo-like" human (Federal)boundaries.............This Administration(like so many others), wants to have it both ways-----------Appease private landholders and attempt to mollify environmentalists..............BAD THIS IS BECAUSE IT WILL CAUSE ONLY MORE CONFLICT DOWN THE ROAD FOR BOTH OF THESE GROUPS(AND FOR THE WOLVES THEMSELVES),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ALWAYS BEST TO GET TO A CLEAR AND DEFINITIVE HANDSHAKE WITH A ROADMAP THAT GETS THINGS DONE, NOT CREATE MORE INDECISION............AS IT RELATES TO THE CIRCLE OF LIFE, WE SHOULD BE MAKING GOOD DEALS, NOT "WIFFLE BALL" DEALS SO THAT BIODIVERSITY TRULY IS ENHANCED AND EXPANDED, NOT PUT ON HOLD OR WEAKENED.................While I am pleased that the Red Wolves will get a chance to stay on the Planet, I know in my heart that the professional biologists in D.C. cannot be pleased with the Directive coming to them from Political Operatives to keep the wolves off private land............This is just throwing the decision on the future of the Red Wolf to the next Administration-----Lousy, in my opinion
