Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Massachusetts Eastern Coyote biologist Jon Way will be pleased to know that his quest to rename the Eastern Coyote----THE COYWOLF-----has at least one vote, this from the Canadian rock band known as the COYWOLVES............Apparently, "the boys in the band" are also quite aware of their natural surroundings with Eastern Coyotes(e.g. Coywolves) very much present in Eastern Canada alongside Eastern Wolves......................Jon's case for the Coywolf moniker is based on Eastern Coyotes having as much as 25% Eastern Wolf lineage from the hybridization that occurred some 100 years ago when Western Coyotes migrated east and a percentage of them mated with a fractured and shrinking Eastern Wolf population....................By the way, your faithful Blogger(Blogger Rick) is both a Country rock(think Poco, Manassas, Byrds) and Southern Rock(think Skynerd, Allmans, Outlaws, Blackfoot) aficionado......Sorry to say, that outside of song 9(you can listen to all their new songs by clicking on the link below) on The Coywolves latest albulm, RISING CALL, none of their tunes hit my sweet spot(or live up to the spirit and grandeur of our Eastern Coyote(Coywolf)
