Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

With Spring coming two weeks earlier than 50 years ago and Fall lasting two weeks longer, the warmer temperatures that we are all enduring are another catalyst stoking the lyme disease in humans and Winter tick scourge in Moose......Couple that with the fact that there are more deer(tick vectors) in the USA than at the time of the Pilgrims and that we have created exploding mice and other rodent populations(tick vectors) via creating "edge habitat" via our building in what were once woodlands and farmlands and you have exploding tick populations infecting all animals including man with lyme and other diseases.........I encourage all of you regardless of locale to read this article in full so as to be fully knowledgeable regarding prevention of tick bite...............As someone who is out in the garden all the time, I will tell you that I put my clothes in the washer immediately upon coming in from the outside and then clean them with with hot water(supposedly kills any ticks)...............Then, right into the shower with a wash cloth to scrub down thoroughly...............While black legged and Winter ticks have always existed, the array of diseases that have become commonplace via their bite is increasing yearly...............There is a video at the bottom of the article talking about one doctor who thinks in a couple of years there will be a shot that one would take annually(think flu shot) to prevent lyme and related ailments from occurring, even if bitten..............In the meantime, be vigilant, no walking on your lawn barefoot,,,,,,,,,,,,Stay on paths when hiking and avoid bushwhacking through uncut brush................Lousy that we have to deal with this but best to know as much as possible so as to stay healthy
