Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Many of you Blog readers are aware of the idiocy that takes place every Winter in Yellowstone Park, where Government employees round up and kill a percentage of the Bison living there so as to prevent them from leaving the Park to find food..............Why the shooting?............To supposedly pacify area Ranchers who both knowingly and unknowingly claim that Bison spread the fetus killing Brucellosis disease to livestock.............Ironically, there has never been a confirmed case of Bison spreading Brucellosis to cattle and in fact the "saintly" and "hunter-worshiped" Elk is in fact the proven transmitter of this deadly disease to domestic cattle...............Of course, Ranchers are willing to share their land with Elk because of hunter demand,,,,,,,, Retired Park Service biologist Mary Meagher who studied bison for 37 years is adamant in her frustration with this Rancher created fraud............. She is 100% correct in her conclusion that “brucellosis is a smoke screen" ......... “The real issue is that ranchers don’t want bison out there on the land".........The ranchers want it all for themselves..............It is truly ironic that the animals that ranchers hate even more than Bison----Wolves, Bears, Pumas and Coyotes----- are actually Ranchers "best friends in the Brucellosis battle........ These carnivores kill and "clean up aborted fetuses from elk and bison"..................Researchers have concluded that Infected(elk and bison) "birthing material be the most likely cause of the spread of brucellosis in the wild"............"(There has been) a study where(elk and bison) fetuses were placed on Yellowstone and private lands outside the park to determine which predators visited and how long the carcasses lasted on the landscape'............ "Inside Yellowstone, the fetuses disappeared more quickly — most before 20 days"............. "The farthest a fetus was moved(outside the Park) was two miles"............... "(In these locations), soil, tissue and vegetation at Elk and Bison abortion sites could remain infected with brucellosis for up to 43 days in April, falling to 26 days in May".............. “Natural environmental conditions and scavenging conspire to kill brucella and remove potentially infected fetal tissue from the environment by June 15,” the study found"................... “The more (wolves, pumas, bears) coyotes and scavengers we have on the landscape, the faster these (infected birthing) tissues disappear"........... "Also noted, (is) that wolves and coyotes spread elk out across the landscape"........... "Animal crowding is (also) believed to increase the risk of disease transmission".......... “Spatial dynamics on the landscape is very important in understanding brucellosis"..............So keep the Bison from being killed in Yellowstone,,,,,,,Rewild the landscape with Wolves, Bears, Pumas and Coyotes.................and health returns to the land----and Ranchers livestock!!!!!
