Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Our friend, Maine Coyote biologist Geri Vistein has just started a new carnivore co-existence initiative with a very informative new website called FARMING WITH CARNIVORES NETWORK.........The FARMING WITH CARNIVORES NETWORKS "mission is to foster community in its widest sense by assisting farmers in the Eastern United States, who are seeking to keep their farm animals safe from predation by carnivores, without the use of lethal means"......... "This is accomplished by the use of animal husbandry practices that work, and understanding the ecology of your carnivore neighbors"............ "By practicing the highest standards of stewardship, farmers are then able to live peacefully with carnivores, resulting in a balanced and sustainable ecosystem on their farm".......... "Does farming get any better than this?".........."Community is all about sharing, and farmers who are already practicing this farming of the future will be contributing how they farm with carnivores"........... "We(THE FARMING WITH CARNIVORES NETWORKS) will be offering an active discussion opportunity for all those who wish to share or ask questions"............Blog readers, bookmark Geri's site and get your east coast friends involved and participating..............Also, if you have not already purchased a copy of Geri's recently published I AM COYOTE, get yourself onto Amazon.com and pick up a copy........I found it hard to put down and finished it within a week......Beautifully written and full of insights on the behaviours and motivations of our Eastern Coyote!

Subject: new farming website

Greetings Rick,
I wanted to share a new website that we have been working on for some time. Its domain name is: www.FarmingwithCarnivoresNetwork.com  If the excuse to kill our carnivores is because they kill our livestock, what if we made use of animal husbandry practices that work, and support stable populations of complex social species like coyotes, who seek out their wild prey. So this website is all about supporting farmers who wish to protect their farm animals from predation....without the use of lethal means.

But it is more than that. It is all about supporting each other, engaging each other and teaching each other. I have attached a jpg of the Homepage of this site.
I would be pleased if you would share this with the community on your wonderful blog. Thank you, Rick.
Best regards,
Geri Vistein

I Am Coyote

I have exciting news that I wish to share with you ~
The publication of my new book I Am Coyote has finally arrived, and it will be available in mid-October of this year. I welcome you to seek it out on Amazon or your local book stores, and share it with your local libraries and schools and give as gifts to one another.

My book has evolved out of the time I have shared with our community members and the many questions asked of me, as well as the need I have observed in helping our people to understand the lives of these reclusive, amazing wild beings. I have chosen to write it as a story; a story following one young female Coyote and her mate in their journey through life. Follow her and her mate and get to know who Coyote IS through her eyes.
Distinguished fellow scientist and Author of Beyond Words, Carl Safina, commented on my book: “This is not a book about “a species of animal” and what “it” does. Geri Vistein takes us so deep into Coyote’s skin and behind the eyes and nose that she reveals for us the intricacies and perceptions of creatures who lead lives among us. This is the right perspective for understanding who we are here with on Earth. Vistein has chosen one of the absolutely most wondrous fellow-creatures in America to make our introduction.”
