It is so satisfying to see that the NY TIMES picked up and went National with the story on Rob Wielgus"s latest research revealing that when we humans persecute Wolves, the remaining Wolves actually do more damage to livestock than pre-Wolf killing............As in his peer reviewed research on human persecution of Pumas, Weilgus and team shows how our killing of carnivores leads to social disruption and increased "anti human" behaviour in the form of livestock killings.................."“For each wolf you kill, the livestock depredations appear to go up 5 percent the next year"............. Researcher: Killing wolves can increase livestock conflicts

Washington State University wolf researcher Robert Wielgus has released a report that killing wolves leads to increased depredations.


Depending on the wolf pack’s structure, killing a wolf one year can increase livestock conflicts the next, a Washington State University researcher says.

But ranchers and wildlife managers question the study’s findings, saying that killing wolves needs to be one of the tools they need to stop attacks on livestock.



Robert Wielgus, associate professor and director of WSU’s Large Carnivore Conservation Laboratory, recently published his findings in the international online journal PLOS ONE.

“For each wolf you kill, the livestock depredations appear to go up 5 percent the next year,” Wielgus said. He examined 25 years of wolf-livestock interaction data from Montana and 17 years of data from Idaho and Wyoming. For wolves, breeding pairs are responsible for most livestock attacks. Breeding pairs stay near their dens and don’t follow natural prey. When natural prey move out of the pair’s area, the wolves may turn to eating livestock, he says.

He found that killing wolves leads to a 5 percent increase in breeding pairs, he said. A breeding pair, — the dominant male and female in a pack — suppress reproduction in the other wolves in the pack. If they’re killed, the pack’s structure fractures and some of the remaining wolves become breeding pairs, which can be more inclined to attack livestock if natural prey is not available.

The number of livestock depredations increases until 25 percent of the wolves in the pack have been killed, Wielgus said. The number of breeding pairs also declines after 25 percent of the wolves in a pack have been killed.

Wielgus recommends nonlethal means of preventing depredation such as fladry, moving the wolves and Foxlights. Fladry are small flags or ribbons attached to fences. Foxlights have a series of lights that give the impression of movement at night, keeping predators away from livestock.

He’s studied seven wolf packs’ interactions with 14 livestock herds. Few or no livestock depredations occurred when fladry, shepherds and range riders were used during one year, he said.
“My sample sizes are low, but so far so good,” he said. “Ranchers who are working with me using preventative and remedial measures have suffered zero or very little livestock losses, and ranchers who have refused to cooperate with me, some of them have experienced very severe livestock losses.”

State wildlife managers and ranchers say killing problem wolves quickly eliminates the depredation problem, but Wielgus said he hasn’t seen a peer-reviewed, published paper to that effect.
Jack Field, executive vice president of the Washington Cattlemen’s Association, doesn’t see any value for ranchers in Wielgus’ report. He believes it’s too early to draw any conclusions, and called for more wolf-collar data on packs that roam the state.

“Lethal control is an absolute necessity in wolf recovery,” Field said. “There’s great value in nonlethal deterrents, but we can’t fool ourselves to think you can use nonlethal deterrents and never have conflict.”

Field said ranchers believe the state’s current cougar management strategy, based on Wielgus’ previous study, is not working.
Wielgus previously reported a similar social disruption in cougar populations, in which older cougars that were killed were replaced by younger cougars that were more likely to attack livestock.
“I don’t know of any livestock producer out there who’s going to embrace the concept of considering the idea of killing fewer wolves and that allowing wolves to depredate on livestock is anything tolerable,” he said.

John Pierce, chief wildlife scientist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, said Wielgus’ study is not definitive, because it’s a “retrospective look at a hodgepodge” of information. It’s not surprising that the social structure of large carnivores is an important part of how they interact with their environment, he said.
It’s premature to expect Wielgus’ study to influence the state’s wolf recovery efforts, Pierce said. Wielgus’ results might be more relevant when wolves have recovered and are more established on the landscape, he said.

“We don’t do a lot of lethal removal. We’re very strategic in the lethal removal that we do,” he said, calling it an effective tool and a stopgap relief for ranchers whose repeatedly lose livestock to wolves.

“We would have lethal removal in our tool box, and use it judiciously when we needed to,” Pierce said.
WDFW is most interested in the effectiveness of nonlethal measures, he said.

Wielgus advises ranchers to report conflicts quickly and use preventive measures, if they can.

“If preventative doesn’t work and remedial doesn’t work, you’re left with lethal measures,” he said. “All we’re saying is, instead of jumping to lethal right off the bat, maybe we should look at nonlethal, because down the road, lethal measures give you this increased predation. I see no reason why the nonlethal (measures) would do the same thing.”

"Regrettably, the board with its narrow focus and representation has, in the case of the coyote, kept the myth of coyote as “vermin” alive and well – they may be killed any day of the year for any reason or no reason"...... "They(NY Game Managers) seemingly dismiss and certainly discount more scientifically-grounded data"................And as it relates to his own home state of Vermont's wildlife laws he correctly states: "There should be a wider lens that the board looks through to ensure an ecologically diverse Vermont with healthy wildlife populations; the lens should not only look at game as the paramount product"




















Human persecution, climate change and disease are the big three hypotheses behind the demise of North American Mega-Fauna 10,000 years ago(Saber tooth Cats, Dire Wolves, Mastodons, The American Lion and Cheetah, et al)............. Human persecution is the theory of choice from most scientists...........Now, evidence has been unearthed that the Mastodon population had already been greatly depleted 50,000 years ago with humans not entering the Continent until at most 25,000 years ago................Did climate and disease begin the downward spiral of these animal groups with humans then finishing them off?

Maybe humans weren't to blame for the demise of the American mastodon after all.
For years, conventional wisdom held that mastodons were hunted to extinction in North America some 10,000 years ago. But a new study echoes previous researchindicating that mastodons and most of the other big animals that once lived on the continent, known as megafauna, may have already died out before humans migrated to North America from Asia.
"We're not saying that humans were uninvolved in the megafauna's last stand 10,000 years ago. But by that time, whatever the mastodon population was down to, their range had shrunken mostly to the Great Lakes region," study co-author Dr. Ross MacPhee, a curator in the mammalogy department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, said in a written statement. "That's a very different scenario from saying the human depredations caused universal loss of mastodons across their entire range within the space of a few hundred years, which is the conventional view."
For the study, which was published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on December 1, 2014, the researchers used two types of radiocarbon dating on 36 fossilized mastodon teeth and bones that had been unearthed in Alaska and the Yukon.
What did the research reveal about North America's mastodons?
"We learned that they weren't even here by the time people showed up," Dr. Grant Zazula, a paleontologist with Canada's Yukon Palaeontology Program and the study's lead author, told CBC News.
In fact, the fossils are far older than previously thought, with most surpassing 50,000 years old. And archaeologists estimate that humans started moving to North America no earlier than about 25,000 years ago.

"There was a massive [mastodon] die-off of a good part of their population in the northern part of the continent around 75,000 years ago," Zazula told the Los Angeles Times. "We suspect that once the northern group died off, the species was already heading toward trouble... What ultimately pushed them over the edge, though--hunters picking off the last of them or climate change at the end of the ice age being just too much for them--is an unanswered question. There isn't a smoking gun."

If the Governments of Canada and the USA are truly serious about maintaining, restoring and dare I whisper(increasing) the Woodland Caribou population of North America, then they have to shelve wolf killing campaigns and instead focus on maintaining and recreating unbroken forest habitat that is not pock marked by thousands of oil and gas drilling sites, roads and other human infrastructure..............The abominable experiment carried out in west-central Alberta, Canada where 890 wolves were purposely killed to see if Caribou populations would increase was a failure both in terms of objective(increasing caribou) and ethics(slaughtering a top trophic carnivore..................As an old boss of mine used to say to us: WAKE UP, START DOING,,,START ACCOMPLISHING

ABSTRACT

Across Canada, woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou (Gmelin, 1788)) populations are declining because of human-induced changes to food webs that are resulting in apparent competition-induced increases in predator-caused caribou mortality. We tested the hypothesis that wolf (Canis lupus L., 1758) population reduction could reverse declines in a woodland caribou population following a BACI (before-after-control-impact) design conducted over a 12-year period in west-central Alberta, Canada. We monitored annual survival for 172 adult female caribou and calf recruitment from 2000 through 2012 and conducted a provincial government delivered wolf population reduction program annually during the winters of 2005–2006 to 2012 (inclusive) in an area centered on the Little Smoky range. Wolf removal translated to a 4.6% increase in mean population growth rate of the Little Smoky population mostly through improvements in calf recruitment. In contrast, the Red Rock Prairie Creek control population exhibited a 4.7% decline. Although the wolf population reduction program appeared to stabilize the Little Smoky population, it did not lead to population increase, however, with Î» remaining approximately equal to 1. Therefore, we recommend, if required, predation management be combined with effective habitat conservation and long-term planning to effect the recovery of species, such as woodland caribou, which are declining as a result of habitat-mediated apparent competition.

Abstract.--- It is widely recognized that protected areas can strongly influence ecologicalsystems and that hybridization is an important conservation issue.

 However, previous studies have not explicitly considered the influence of protected areas on hybridization dynamics.
Eastern wolves are a species of special concern and their distribution is largely restricted to a protected population in Algonquin Provincial Park (APP), Ontario, Canada, where they are
the numerically dominant canid.

 We studied intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing survival
and cause-specific mortality of hybrid and parental canids in the three-species hybrid zonebetween eastern wolves, eastern coyotes, and gray wolves in and adjacent to APP. 

Mortalityrisk for eastern wolves in areas adjacent to APP was significantly higher than for othersympatric Canis types outside of APP, and for eastern wolves and other canids within APP.
Outside of APP, the annual mortality rate of all canids by harvest (24%) was higher than forother causes of death (4–7%). Furthermore, eastern wolves (hazard ratio ¼ 3.5) and
nonresidents (transients and dispersing animals, hazard ratio ¼ 2.7) were more likely to diefrom harvest relative to other Canis types and residents, respectively. 

Thus, eastern wolvesdispersing from APP were especially vulnerable to harvest mortality. For residents, eastern
wolf survival was more negatively influenced by increased road density than for other Canistypes, further highlighting the sensitivity of eastern wolves to human disturbance. A cycle of
dispersal from APP followed by high rates of mortality and hybridization appears to maintaineastern wolves at low density adjacent to APP, limiting the potential for expansion beyond the
protected area.

 However, high survival and numerical dominance of eastern wolves within APP suggest that protected areas can allow rare hybridizing species to persist even if their demographic performance is compromised and barriers to hybridization are largely absent in the adjacent matrix.

Rachel Tilseth of WOLVES OF DOUGLAS COUNTY WISCONSIN blogged on the fact that Wisconsin will seek to adhere to the 150 wolf kill quota that was established for this season and not allow certain zones in the state to continue to kill wolves simply because their zone was not "filled up"..............Wisconsin is one of our states blessed with wolves, coyotes and bobcats and where hunters are allowed to use dogs to chase the animals........And not only that,,,once the wolf killing season is over, hunters can still run their dogs after wolves so that the dogs become trained for future hunts ........STOP THIS ALREADY...............Can some sanity as it relates to fair chase come into the consciousness of the folks setting the rules up there?




WDNR has open seasons on bobcat & coyote and it is legal to run dogs on wolves for training purposes in WI.

I just spoke with David MacFarland, WDNR, who confirmed; as of

today WDNR administration will not allow zones 3 and 6 to fill.

MacFarland also said, “WDNR are watching the quota numbers

closely.”
For well over a month, WDNR has been ducking the issue about

how to handle overages caused by not watching the zone quotas

closely enough. But have finally made a decision today.
There’s more to this than meets the eye. WDNR seems to “bite off

more than they can handle.” Considering DNR wardens are

outnumbered, over-worked and under staffed.
WDNR has open seasons right now on Bobcats and coyotes

with use of dogs. That means hound handlers are out there now

hunting bobcat, and coyote with Dogs running down wildlife all

over the north woods of WI.
That’s not the half of it as hounders are now (and have been

allowed to) train their dogs to hunt wolves. Even if the wol

f hunt season closes today hound handlers can run dogs on

Boone Smith is a big cat tracker who has spent 20 years catching a total of nearly 500 cougars and pumas in Chile, California, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Colorado, collaring or marking more than 150 of them............ A fourth-generation tracker and houndman raised on a cattle ranch in southeast Idaho, Smith has used his expertise to gather data on big cats, their behavior and their landscape to help scientists with conservation studies............... Boone is the host of Man v. Lion, which kicks off Nat Geo WILD’s Big Cat Week (Nov. 28 – Dec. 3) an extension of the Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world.................I hope one day that instead of collaring wild and free animals, some other type non-invasive technology can be utilized in the studying of carnivores.

Collaring Cougars

A large portion of my capture career has been focused on
 mountain lions or cougars as they're also referred to. My
 job is really quite simple: Find, track, capture and radio
 collar these animals so that scientists can obtain valuable
 data to make management and conservations decisions.

The process goes like this: After locating a track, I turn 
specially trained hounds loose to scent trail the cougar 
and chase it up a tree. The dogs really do the toughest 
part of the job; they run with unmatched passion and 
excitement, covering endless miles. When I arrive on scene,
 I leash the dogs. A tranquilizer dart is quickly loaded, and
 the cat is darted. My job then becomes a little tricky. I must
 climb the tree, rope up the cougar by the hind legs and 
lower it to the ground safely. Animal safety is priority 
number one, and despite putting myself in what may
 seem like a very dangerous situation, I take it very 
seriously and use a lot of common sense. The protocols
 for animal tracking are designed to do just that -- 
keep us all safe. But the wild is not a controlled 
environment, and sometimes adapting on the fly is
 the name of the game. I have been chased out of trees, 
snarled at and swatted at, and I've literally had to 
wrestle cats to get the job done. The "rodeo," as I call
 it, is what I believe is the best part of my skill set -- 
making it work when things are not going according
 to plan.

When we have the cougar on the ground, we place a
 GPS collar on it and gather all kinds of information
 (weight, age, blood samples, DNA, measurements, etc.).
 We then give the animal a reversal drug to get it up 
and on its feet. Animals are fully recovered in less 
than an hour. The collar then allows us to learn
 information such as movements, habitat use, 
predation rates and proximity to other predators
 and humans. This data then helps us understand
 unique dynamics that exist for specific species in 
different regions.

I recognize the capture process is fairly invasive. There is no
 doubt that the animal is stressed from our actions and 
presence. However, these animals are hardy and tough 
and evolved to be very resilient and adaptive. And the means
 justifies the end, because the data we get from the collars is
 so essential to wildlife conservation. People often tell me we
 should just leave these animals alone, and nature will 
restore them, but the human footprint is so large and
 far-reaching. We have to factor ourselves into the
 equation when talking about conservation and management.
So why go to all the effort? Cougars, like all big cats, are
 apex predators. Healthy big cat populations help 
balance ecosystems and environments. Additionally, 
big cats require big spaces. Also, whether we recognize
 it or not, we need these wild places with big predators.
 Perhaps we don't go there often, but all of us need 
that touch of the wild.
