Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Sally Mackler of PREDATOR DEFENSE bringing us up to date on the fact that only 1 Oregon "HOUNDS HUNTING COUGARS" bill remains before the Oregon Congressional delegation for action...........Here is hoping that this bill never makes it out of committee and that the people of Oregon are respected for their previous two votes that banned Cougar hunting with hounds

Hi Rick,

I received copy of your Facts on Wolves and Cougars from Brooks Fahy, Predator Defense.  I am the Oregon Carnivore Representative for Predator Defense.  Thanks for your good work and informing people of how they can help predators.

I would like to correct some of the info on Oregon cougar legislation.  There is only one bill remaining alive in Salem now, Hb2337 which would allow counties to reinstate trophy hound hunting of cougars, a practice which was prohibited by the voters twice.

For more information on the bill and how to track it etc. please see our website. The cougar and wolf pages have  up to date info on the bills and how to keep track of them and how to contact the appropriate legislators to oppose the bills.  Here are links, fyi:

I would be interested in being on your list serve, if there is one.

Thanks again,
Sally Mackler
