Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Last month, two well-known wildlife photographers — John Marriott and Brandon Brown — photographed what are thought to be the Lynx pair (or at least they think it's the same pair) that had been previously seen and cataloged in Banff National Park in Canada........... Brown, who found the lynx and her kitten near Lake Louise, sent Marriott a text on March 8 to let him know they were in the area..................Enjoy their outstanding pictures below

A lynx mother and her kitten became quite famous this winter after spending a lot of time around Lake Louise. They showed up at the Lake Louise ski hill, crossed theTrans-Canada Highway and spent some time looking in the window at Deer Lodge.
Last month, two well-known wildlife photographers — John Marriott and Brandon Brown — had their own experiences with the pair (or at least they think it's the same pair).
Brown, who found the lynx and her kitten near Lake Louise, sent Marriott a text on March 8 to let him know they were in the area.

Marriott said it led to one of the most amazing experiences of his 20-year career.
"We ended up following mom and the kitten for an incredible 6.5 hours through waist-deep snow to the point of complete and utter exhaustion," Marriott said in an email.
He and Brown found the pair several more times over the next month.
"In total, the two of us spent more than 41 hours with her … shooting more than 13,000 pictures," said Marriott, noting they decided not to share the photos until the lynx had moved on.
Here are some photos they sent my way this week to show Herald readers:

Brown called it "some of my most captivating imagery" and Marriott said it was an experience he'll never forget.
"We watched her catch and eat snowshoe hare, and, even better yet, we watched her attack and try to pull down an adult deer right in front of us," said Marriott, noting they were too stunned to get photos of the attack on the deer. "It was easily the most shocking and spectacular thing I have ever seen in the wild."
Here are some photos of the lynx hunting and eating a snowshoe hare, though.
