Grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars/ mountain lions, bobcats, wolverines, lynx, foxes, fishers and martens are the suite of carnivores that originally inhabited North America after the Pleistocene extinctions. This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. All of the above being revealed and discussed with the underlying goal of one day seeing our Continent rewilded.....Where big enough swaths of open space exist with connective corridors to other large forest, meadow, mountain, valley, prairie, desert and chaparral wildlands.....Thereby enabling all of our historic fauna, including man, to live in a sustainable and healthy environment. - Blogger Rick

Ecologist Cristina Eisenberg is back with us for a 2nd day of insightful pondering about how to best protect protect and enhance biodiversity in a rapidly changing environment of climate, population, economic and social change..........Cristina always makes you think, puts the problem squarely between your eyes and then puts forth some optimistic thoughts on how Coyotes, Wolves, Cougars and the rest of creation can be walking alongside of us for the millennium ahead.............As she puts it--------"Scientists estimate that, due to climate change and other factors, 35 percent of the species currently on Earth are expected to become extinct by the year 2050, and 50 percent by the year 2200".........."We need to do something."........................ "As Einstein put it, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking that created them"................ "We would do well to heed his wise words as we sail our raft of environmental laws into the brave new world we’ve created"
