This site invites research, commentary, point/counterpoint on that suite of native animals (predator and prey) that inhabited The Americas circa 1500-at the initial point of European exploration and subsequent colonization. Landscape ecology, journal accounts of explorers and frontiersmen, genetic evaluations of museum animals, peer reviewed 20th and 21st century research on various aspects of our "Wild America" as well as subjective commentary from expert and layman alike. Ironic that declaring an animal Endangered can result in lack of protection because of business stiffening it's back and fighting tooth and nail to prevent rules and restrictions that could cut into their profits...............If ever one of our native carnivores merited protection, it is the Wolverine................We hope Colorado goes ahead with it's restoration efforts!

Potential endangered status threatens U.S. effort to bring back the wolverine

After the resounding success of a decade-long wildlife project that saw dozens of lynx airlifted from Canada to restore the tuft-eared wildcat to its historic habitat in Colorado, the U.S. state was preparing to turn to this country again for help in reintroducing the wolverine to the mountain forests of the American southwest.But Colorado's plan to welcome back the giant, razor-toothed weasel - a beast Prime Minister Stephen Harper has held up as a symbol of Canada's fierce independence - could falter for the most unexpected of reasons: the U.S. government's newly proposed designation of the wolverine as an endangered species.The Dec. 13 announcement by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service may actually deter Colorado's conservation stakeholders from proceeding with the wolverine reintroduction because of the stringent land-use rules typically imposed on the habitats of endangered animals.In other words, says Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton, transplanting Canadian wolverines to the snowy terrain around Aspen would become much more complicated if the animal is officially deemed endangered rather than "extirpated," or regionally extinct.
"What we don't want to do is reintroduce an animal, have it come in here and move up on that priority list to become an endangered species, and then the federal government says to farmers, ranchers, ski areas, snowmobilers, landowners: 'Stop. You can't do X, Y or Z,' " Hampton told Postmedia News.He said it was ironic that proclaiming the animal endangered could scuttle a repopulation initiative. "It is a complicating factor, but not a dismissing factor," Hampton said. ". . . we remain interested in doing the reintroduction, but not at any cost - meaning we've got to take a look at the social implications."That leaves the wolverine in limbo in Colorado, but Hampton said the successful reintroduction of the lynx - thanks to imports of the predator from B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, Yukon and Alaska - offers a compelling precedent for conservation advocates to persist with the wolverine transplant.
So, too, does the story of an individual male wolverine that wandered into northern Colorado last year from Yellowstone National Park in northern Wyoming. It was the first confirmed presence of a wolverine in Colorado since 1919, fuelling excitement over a possible reintroduction and the apparent reconnection - however fragile - of a continuous corridor of wild mountain habitat from Colorado to Wyoming to Montana to Canada via the Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Glacier national parks in the U.S. Rockies.
The U.S. federal wildlife service's proposal this month to declare wolverines endangered in the lower 48 states follows a controversial 2008 refusal to do so by the same agency. At the time, wildlife advocates accused the Republican administration of then-president George W. Bush of relying on Canada's higher wolverine numbers to avoid giving special protections to the animal in the U.S.Experts believe there are only about 500 wolverines in the lower 48 U.S. states. Alaska has about 8,000 of the metre-long animals, which can weigh up to 18 kilograms. Canada's population is estimated at 15,000.
Even so, Canadian wildlife advocates have expressed concerns about the wolverine's future in this country. Historic populations in Quebec and Labrador have disappeared, and climate change is seen as a major threat to remaining populations from Ontario to western and northwestern Canada, where the wolverine requires deep snow cover in rugged forests to maintain its niche in nature.
The voracious scavenger feeds primarily on dead caribou, and has even been known to fend off grizzly bears to protect a feast.
In 2007, Harper used a speech about Canada-U.S. relations to propose an alternative to Pierre Trudeau's famous elephant-and-mouse analogy for the two countries.
"I always felt that (Trudeau's) comparison sold us a little short," Harper said, voicing his preference for imagining America as a grizzly and Canada as a wolverine: "We may be smaller, but we're no less fierce about protecting our territory."
Colorado's proposed wolverine reintroduction would be the latest in a string of bi-national projects to restore long-lost wildlife populations to parts of North America where they'd thrived before urban development and other forces catastrophically depleted critical habitat.As with the lynx, officials managing reintroduction programs in the U.S. typically turn to Canada for supplies of animals to be transplanted. Controversial efforts to restore wolf populations in some parts of the U.S., for example, have typically relied on Canadian imports.In another major bi-national effort to rescue an iconic endangered species, Canadian and American wildlife experts have been co-operating for decades to sustain the world's last natural population of whooping cranes, which migrates annually between Wood Buffalo National Park along the Alberta-Northwest Territories border to summer feeding grounds in Texas.As part of that effort, eggs from whooping crane nests in Canada have been collected and hatched in U.S. bird sanctuaries to foster captive breeding populations.
Earlier this year, the discovery in Alberta of a dead lynx wearing a Colorado satellite collar was hailed as a promising sign for North American nature since U.S. habitats had evidently supplied enough rabbits and other prey to sustain the predator through its record-setting, 2,000-kilometre journey back to Canada.

Last winter, our family business, a school in Glen Spey, notified our town that we intended to build a two-story classroom addition. Over time, we were compelled to hire three engineers costing $20,000 to study soils, septic discharge, runoff into streams, parking capacity, fire safety and health issues. Though not elated, we assured the town of our understanding for the need to protect human and environmental health. Until our cumulative impact study was completed, however, we could not drive a single nail, in effect a six-month delay, or moratorium—for a simple building addition.
Another project, somewhat larger than mine, could have impacts accumulating over 30,000 sites totaling 120,000 acres requiring 30 million truck trips for the transport of 270 billion gallons of water to which two billion gallons of toxic chemicals would be added before injection underground. The project, of course, is gas drilling, and the impacts are either entirely exempt from any rules or so under-regulated that Bradford County, PA Conservation District Manager, Mike Lovegreen, says he must sit by in disbelief as trucks hauling contaminated water ply his rural roads without written manifests detailing the nature, gallonage, or the destination of their poisonous cargo.
Why an entire industry routinely receives such exemptions can be explained with terms like "Halliburton loophole" which by now we can all spell backwards. But this privilege flows from another far more sinister concept—national sacrifice zones. Absent protection under the law, the Navajo with lung cancer from uranium mining, West Virginians with liver disorders from coal slurry and Texans sucking benzene are now joined by counties in Pennsylvania, which district manager Lovegreen wanly refers to as "throw away zones."
A government-corporate coziness legitimizes de facto tyranny over the ability of whole peoples to control their own destinies and to enjoy the fruits of our democracy—including` the redress of grievances. Are we to become the next sacrifice zone? The gas industry is banking on a growing fatalism that kills hope and asks us to forget that our leaders have ever promised to protect us from such dangers, by intoning the presence of forces over which we have no control.
If my town (Lumberland) is so concerned that the environment of Glen Spey not be sacrificed through unchecked development of local businesses with roots in the community, should it not be far more concerned with the encroachment of a large scale and potentially dangerous industry partially or wholly owned by foreign entities? Guess what? Lumberland is! So too is the Town of Highland, both throwing off the mantle of weakness and now leading the region in seeking ways to challenge the authority of the state to pre-empt community decision-making, and, in so doing, restoring the promises—and our faith in democracy. Cruelty can't stand the spotlight: Ending animal abuse is merely a click away so let's make it a New Year's resolution

It's easy to include ending animal abuse among your New Year's resolutions

Animal abuse remains rampant in a wide variety of places. I'm always surprised by what I read about how we treat nonhuman animal beings in situations where abuse seems unimaginable. But, it's incredibly easy to contribute to ending it. So many of us spend a lot of time at our computer so when you take a break I suggest doing a web-search for something like "petitions to end animal abuse" and find some examples that might even be in your home community that really irk you and offer your opinion. Another good place to look is at change.org.
 Even if each of us has different interests and opinions about what constitutes animal abuse, it's easy to find something about which you're passionately against and register your vote by a few simple clicks of your mouse. Even if you only do this a few times a week innumerable animals will be grateful for our collective efforts. Even helping one individual makes a difference. There's nothing fluffy or sentimental about caring about animals and being passionate about ending it.
 Think about companion animals such as dogs and cats and ask yourself would you ever do to them, or allow others to treat them, in the utterly inhumane ways in which billions of other animals are routinely mistreated?
I expect the answer would be "no".  Cruelty can't stand the spotlight and indifference is deadly. Please do something now. We all feel good about adding compassion to our troubled world and it's really so easy to do.

Marquette & Joliet, 1673 On a May day more than 300 years ago, two unlikely explorers set out on a four-month voyage that carried them thousands of miles through the heart of America. The two were Father Jacques Marquette, a studious Jesuit two weeks shy of his 36th birthday, and Louis Joliet, a 27-year-old philosophy student turned fur trader. Their voyage was the seed that would sprout the first white settlements in the interior of North America, introduce Christianity into 600,000 square miles of wilderness, give French names to cities from New Orleans to LaCrosse, transform Indian cultures and lifestyles from Minnesota to Missouri, and nearly exterminate the fur-bearing mammals of the Upper Midwest.

Aug. 25, 1673: Entering The Illinois River

After nearly six weeks of paddling upstream, Marquette and Joliet finally reached the mouth of the Illinois River on August 25th. Although still going against the current, the Illinois was much smaller and less turbulent than the lower Mississippi. This became the prefered route of travelers going from the Great Lakes to St. Louis and points further south, and most commerce with the lower Mississippi subsequently by-passed the Fox-Wisconsin waterway.
Marquette's Journal: "We have seen nothing like this river that we enter, as regards its fertility of soil, its prairies and woods; its cattle(buffalo), elk, deer, wildcats, bustards [Canada geeese], swans, ducks, parroquets(extinct Carolina parakeet), and even beaver. There are many small lakes and rivers. That on which we sailed is wide, deep, and still, for 65 leagues."

Joliet: "The river which we named for Saint Louis [the Illinois River], which rises near the lower end of the lake of the Illinois, seemed to me the most beautiful, and most suitable for settlement. ... The river is wide and deep, abounding in catfish and sturgeon. Game is abundant there; cattle, stags,(elk) does(deer), and turkeys are found there in greater numbers than elsewhere. For a distance of eighty leagues, I did not pass a quarter of an hour without seeing some.

September 13, 1673: Chicago

Marquette and Joliet reached the site of downtown Chicago about Sept. 13, 1673, but left no description of it. Joliet summarized the entire area in his interview with Fr. Dablon, who made the notes at left, the earliest description of the vicinity that would later become Chicago and its suburbs.

Marquette and Joliet had been guided to Lake Michigan by "one of the chiefs of this nation, with his young men." Fr. Allouez gives a vivid description how welcoming the Illinois tribes were to the Jesuits.
Over the next two or three weeks Marquette and Joliet would have to paddle the western shore of the lake from Chicago to Green Bay, no small feat in the early autumn winds. In subsequent journal entries they exchange calm prairies and shaded forests for rolling whitecaps and towering bluffs. Dablon's Interview with Joliet: �The place at which we entered the lake is a harbor, very convenient for receiving vessels and sheltering them from the wind. The river is wide and deep, abounding in catfish and sturgeon. Game is abundant there; oxen, cows, stags, does, and Turkeys are found there in greater numbers than elsewhere."

End of August, 1673: in the Illinois countryEditor's Note:

The explorer Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de LaSalle, his chief lieutnant Henri de Tonti, his employees, French soldiers, and fur traders utilized this route frequently. For more than 150 years it was the chief way settlers and goods were transported between lake cities such as Montreal or Detroit and the rich interior portion of the continent accessible from St. Louis. Fur traders looking for beaver, who needed access to the Upper Mississippi, continued to prefer the more northern Fox-Wisconsin route by which Marquette and Joliet had started out in May and June of 1673. But after Marquette and Joliet made the Illinois River route known and LaSalle and his many followers relied on it, its lakeshore terminus at Chicago was destined to grown into Lake Michigan's major port rather than Green Bay.Map of Marquette & Joliet's route

LaSalle traveled through the Illinois Country six years later, in December of 1679. While Marquette and Joliet make their way silently upstream, let's read his description below:
"The Illinois River is navigable for canoes at a distance of a hundred paces from its source, winding and increases so rapidly that in a short time it becomes almost as broad and deep as the Marne. It runs through vast marshes, winding so much that, although the current is rather strong, they sometimes found after paddling a whole day that they had not advanced two leagues in a straight line; as far as the eye could reach they saw only marshes covered with reeds and alders, and for more than forty leagues of their course, they would have found no place to encamp but for some mounds of frozen ground upon which they rested and lighted their fire. After traversing these marshes, they found no game as they had expected, because there are only great open plains where nothing grows but very tall grass, which is dry at this season, and had been burnt off by the Miamis in the chase of wild cattle. Animals are usually very numerous here, as it was easy to judge from the skeletons and the heads of these cattle which were seen on all sides...
"Many other kinds of animals are found in these vast plains of Louisiana; stags, roe deer, beavers, otters, are common. In the season are seen herds of two hundred and even four hundred wild cattle [buffalo]; bustards [Canada geese], swans, turtle-doves, turkeys, paroquets [Carolina parakeets], partridges, and many other birds are very numerous. There is an abundance of fish, and the soil is extraordinarily fertile.
"It is a country of boundless prairies, interspersed with forests of high trees, where all sorts of timber for building may be had, among the rest excellent oak, solid like that of France and very different from the Canadian oak. The trees, which are of enormous size and height, would furnish the very best timber for ship-building. There are also in the forests several kinds of fruit-trees, and wild grape-vines producing clusters a foot and a half in length, which ripen perfectly, and of which very good wine is made. Open fields are to be seen covered with very good hemp, growing naturally to the height of six or seven feet."

Joliet's "oxen" were, of course, buffalo, and his speculations about settlers yoking them to the plow show how optimistic he was about the Illinois Country.

Marquette's Journal: "We have seen nothing like this river that we enter, as regards its fertility of soil, its prairies and woods; its cattle, elk, deer, wildcats, bustards [Canada geeese], swans, ducks, parroquets, and even beaver. "There are prairies three, six, ten, and twenty leagues in length, and three in width, surrounded by forests of the same extent; beyond these, the prairies begin again, so that there is as much of one sort of land as of the other. Sometimes we saw the grass very short, and, at other times, five or six feet high; hemp, which grows naturally there, reaches a height of eight feet. A settler would not there spend ten years in cutting down and burning the trees; on the very day of his arrival, he could put his plow into the ground. And, if he had no oxen from France, he could use those of this country, or even the animals possessed by the Western Savages, on which they ride, as we do on horses.
"The 19th, we came to the Mouth of the River, call'd Houabache [the Ohio], said to come from the Country of the Iroquois, towards New England. That is a very fine River, its water extraordinary clear, and the Current of it, gentle. "We observ'd some other Superstitions among those poor People, one whereof was as follows. There were some certain Days, on which they Fasted, and we knew them, when as soon as they awak'd, they besmear'd their Faces and Arms, or other Parts of their Bodies, with a slimy Sort of Earth, or pounded Charcoal ; for that Day they did not eat till Ten or Eleven of the Clock at Night, and before they did eat they were to wipe off that Smearing, and had Water brought them for that Purpose. The Occasion of their Fasting was, as they gave us to understand, that they might have good Success in Hunting, and kill Abundance of bullocks [bison].

Joutel's Journal, on the Arkansas River, July 1687:(a companion of Joliet and Marquette) This is a Country abounding in all Things. The Plains lying on one Side of it, are stor'd with Beeves [buffalo], wild Goats, Deer, Turkeys, Bustards [Canada geese], Swans, Ducks, Teal and other Game. The Trees' produce plenty of Fruit, and very good, as Peaches, Plumbs, Mulberries, Grapes, and Wallnuts. They have a Sort of Fruit they call Piaguimina, not unlike our Medlars but much better and more delicious.

Late June, 1673: Buffalo and Other Mysterious Animals.

This is another entry that exhibits Marquette's interest in and careful description of natural phenomena. The fish that nearly overturned their canoes was probably a channel catfish, which were recorded in the early 19th century as weighing as much as 200 pounds. The spatula-nosed fish is presumed to be the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula), though it has not been found north of the Illinois River in modern times. The tiger-like mammal was probably a bobcat (Lynx rufus) or Canada lynx (L. canadensis).


Marquette's long description of the American buffalo (Bison bison) shows how Europeans were fascinated by anmimals not found in their homelands. The first description of the Buffalo which dates from 1536, is by Spanish explorer Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, whose fascination was echoed by nearly every other European traveler who saw them. The ruby-throated hummingbird evoked a similar fascination.
 Marquette's Journal: "Here we plainly saw that [the river's] aspect was completely changed. There are hardly any woods or mountains; the islands are more beautiful, and are covered with finer trees. We saw only deer and cattle, bustards [Canada geese], and swans without wings, because they drop their plumage in this country.
"From time to time, we came upon monstrous fish, one of which struck our canoe with such violence that I thought that it was a great tree, about to break the canoe to pieces. On another occasion, we saw on the water a monster with the head of a tiger, a sharp nose like that of a wildcat, with whiskers and straight, erect ears; the head was gray and the neck quite black; but we saw no more creatures of this sort. When we cast our nets into the water we caught sturgeon, and a very extraordinary kind of fish. It resembles the trout, with this difference, that its mouth is larger. Near its nose, which is smaller, as are also the eyes, is a large bone shaped like a woman's busk, three fingers wide and a cubit long, at the end of which is a disk as wide as one's hand. This frequently causes it to fall backward when it leaps out of the water.
"When we reached the parallel of 41 degrees 28 minutes, following the same direction, we found that turkeys had taken the place of game; and the pisikious, or wild cattle [buffalo], that of the other animals. We call them "wild cattle," because they are very similar to our domestic cattle. They are not longer, but are nearly as large again, and more corpulent. When our people killed one, three persons had much difficulty in moving it. The head is very large; the forehead is flat, and a foot and half wide between the horns, which are exactly like those of our oxen, but black and much larger. Under the neck they have a sort of large dewlap, which hangs down; and on the back is a rather high hump. The whole of the head, the neck, and a portion of the shoulders, are covered with a thick mane like that of horses; it forms a crest a foot long, which makes them hideous, and, falling over their eyes, prevents them from seeing what is before them. The remainder of the body is covered with a heavy coat of curly hair, almost like that of our sheep, but much stronger and thicker. It falls off in summer, and the skin becomes as soft as velvet. At that season, the savages use the hides for making fine robes, which they paint in various colors. "The flesh and the fat of the pisikious are excellent, and constitute the best dish at feasts. Moreover, they are very fierce; and not a year passes without their killing some savages. When attacked, they catch a man on their horns, if they can, toss him in the air, and then throw him on the ground, after which they trample him under foot, and kill him. If a person fire at them from a distance, with either a bow or a gun, he must, immediately after the shot, throw himself down and hide in the grass; for if they perceive him who has fired, they run at him, and attack him. As their legs are thick and rather short, they do not run very fast, as a rule, except when angry. They are scattered about the prairie in herds; I have seen one of four hundred.

Fish and Game Q&A: What to do with pesky coyotes?

California departtment of Fish and Game seeking to keep hunters and anglers informed, Outposts, on Thursday or Friday, posts marine biologist Carrie Wilson's weekly Q&A column:
Question: For the past 10 months, our neighborhood in Encinitas has been overrun by coyotes. Who can we work with to mitigate the situation before someone gets hurt? (Ken S.)
Answer: Coyotes and other wildlife cannot and should not be removed just because there may appear to be too many in a community. If they are congregating, the problem may be that your neighbors are being careless with food and garbage, which serve as attractants. Coyotes play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to keep rodent populations under control. They are by nature fearful of humans.
Coyotes primarily hunt rodents and rabbits for food but will take advantage of whatever is available, including garbage, pet food and domestic animals. If coyotes are given access to human food and garbage, their behavior changes. They lose caution and fear and may cause property damage or threaten human safety. When this happens and they threaten humans or begin preying on domestic livestock or pets, they may be killed.
Relocating a problem coyote is not an option because it only moves the problem to someone else's neighborhood.

The best thing you can do as an individual is to make sure that you remove pet food and water containers at night, secure your garbage and don't provide any areas of shelter. Try to educate your neighbors about this, too. Without food, water and shelter, your property will be less appealing and the coyotes may move on.
Here's the bottom line -- coyotes may appear to reside and be prevalent in your area, but this isn't a crime as they are natural predators. Problems occur when people don't follow the suggestions above and the animals lose their fear of humans and begin threatening people and their pets and livestock. When that happens the animals may need to be destroyed, and we want to avoid that situation.
If all else fails and the animals become a threat, contact the wildlife biologist in your local area (through DFG's San Diego office, in your case) to discuss your options.

White-tailed Deer Buck Movements During the Rut

The rut can be a particularly exciting time to be afield. Bucks and bulls have one thing on their mind. The intense focus on breeding dramatically changes their behavior. Bachelor groups break up, feeding becomes a distraction, and being secretive and discrete is no longer an advantage. Bucks and bulls come out of cover and into the open to chase, court, and guard females. Wild spaces ring with bugles, grunts, and rattling antlers.
To gain greater insight into the world of a rutting male, scientists at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute have been fitting white-tailed deer bucks with collars that contain a GPS unit. These GPS collars record the buck's location every 20 minutes from the beginning of November through the end of February. This period encompasses the peak of the rut, which is mid to late December in the South Texas study area.
Over the past three years, collars have been placed on over 60 bucks. By analyzing the thousands of locations obtained for each buck, a picture of buck movements before, during, and after the rut becomes clear. To date, we have analyzed data from 33 bucks and the home range of these deer during the 4-month monitoring period averaged 2,967 acres. Although home ranges of over 4.5 square miles seemed large, what was a greater surprise was the huge variation among individual bucks.  The smallest home range was 332 acres and the largest was 13,648 acres! There was a general decrease in home range size as deer aged from yearlings to 3 years of age and then an increase in mature bucks. 
Daily movements in November averaged just less than 3 miles per day. That movement rate jumped to over 5 miles/day during December and over 6 miles per day at the peak of the rut. Again, there was a great deal of variation amongst individual bucks. For example, during December daily movement ranged among bucks from 2.5 miles to over 8 miles per day.
Excursions, defined as short term (usually less than 24 hours) trips that occurred outside of the home range, peaked in December. In fact, every one of the 33 bucks we have analyzed so far has made at least one excursion in December. Fewer than half the bucks made excursions in other months. Some excursions during the rut covered extraordinary distances. For instance, one buck made an 18-mile, round-trip excursion in early December, then 10 days later made another excursion that covered 11 miles.
So what? There are several lessons that this gee-wiz GPS technology can impart:
  • The great increase in movements during the rut explains why hunters are often successful hunting trophy bucks during the breeding season. It also explains why bucks that have not been seen before suddenly show up during the rut, and why they can just as quickly disappear.
  • The high rate of daily movement, coupled with bucks focusing on breeding instead of eating, explains why they lose up to 30% of their body weight in a 4-6 week period. The stress of the rut helps explain why 80% of non-hunting mortality in bucks occurs from December to March in southern Texas.
  • The large movements of bucks during the rut make it imperative that white-tailed deer are managed at a large scale. One property, even if it is small, can harvest so many bucks that few reach maturity, denying nearly everyone in the region a shot at a trophy buck.

Third dead panther in five days found in Eastern Collier County


NAPLES — A female panther was found dead today on agricultural land north of the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Collier County.
The uncollared panther, about 1 1/2 years old and about 45 pounds, had been killed in an attack with another panther, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists reported.
Three panthers have been found dead in Southwest Florida since Sunday, bringing the total number of panther deaths so far this year to 23, including 16 killed in collisions with vehicles.
On Sunday, wildlife biologists recovered a dead 9-month-old male panther along County Road 846 in Hendry County east of Immokalee. It had been hit by a vehicle, biologists said.
Biologists recovered the carcass of a 5-year-old male panther Wednesday on Lee County Port Authority mitigation land north of Corkscrew Road in Lee County.
The panther was sent to the Conservation Commission wildlife research lab in Gainesville for a necropsy to determine a cause of death

Implications of Fire History for Conserving Bighorn Sheep

Steep, rocky terrain is widely recognized as an important component of bighorn sheep habitat. Visual openness, however, also is important because it enhances the probability that bighorn sheep can detect and evade predators. In southern California, some populations of bighorn sheep occupy chaparral habitat, which in the absence of fire can become an almost impenetrable barrier and impacts the ability of bighorn sheep to detect predators. As chaparral vegetation matures, it produces forage of poorer quality than that available in similar, but recently burned, areas.My colleagues and I accumulated springtime aerial survey data over a period of 25 years, during which time the physical structure of chaparral vegetation occupied by bighorn sheep changed substantially. Those changes occurred as a function of time elapsed since fires, but also as a result of recent fires. We used those observations to examine the importance of fire (which reduces visual obstructions caused by dense vegetation) to habitat selection by bighorn sheep in the San Gabriel Mountains of eastern Los Angeles County and western San Bernardino County.
Our research indicated that bighorn sheep in the San Gabriel Mountains selected sites that had burned within 15 years. We also used our results to quantify potential changes in availability of bighorn sheep habitat based on fire history. In that exercise, we identified 150 square miles of suitable habitat that existed in 2002 (when only 63 bighorn sheep were tallied), 188 square miles in 1980 (when the bighorn sheep population was at its highest level), and 163 square miles in 2004, just after a series of large wildfires. We also estimated that 238 square miles of otherwise suitable habitat would be available in a hypothetical situation if the entire study area burned
.

Results of this study indicate that:
  • In chaparral ecosystems, fire history is an important parameter explaining habitat selection by bighorn sheep in areas where other features (e.g., slope, aspect, ruggedness, etc.) are suitable for sheep.
  • Restoration of bighorn sheep to their historical distribution in chaparral-dominated ecosystems of the transverse ranges of southern California will depend upon more frequent fires.
  • The presence of treasured big game animals, such as bighorn sheep, should not be taken for granted. Their presence is the result of ecological processes and natural resource management. This study has important implications for the conservation of bighorn sheep, and the results should be incorporated into land management plans.

Wolves should remain a protected species

    Once again we are seeing a push to delist the wolves in Minnesota. This time the campaign is being driven by Senator Amy Klobuchar and her political contributors. Not only is there a push to delist the wolves but we are hearing rumors of bills being introduced in Congress that would outlaw any endangered species act protection for gray wolves. The sole purpose of such actions could only be to completely eradicate the entire wolf population. Think about that and the consequences it would bring as wolves play such an important part in our ecosystem. This is an unbelievable push by special interest groups to cut short the promising recovery we have seen to date since the near extinction of this species just a few years ago. It would lay way for the slaughter of our Minnesota wolves.
    I can only imagine the devastation that will occur to their numbers if protections for the wolf are lifted. The population already struggles from poaching and disease. If protections are lifted I truly believe that in a very short time we would see the wolf population in the same predicament we saw in the 1960s and 1970s.
    Many ranchers and farmers are open to the non-lethal methods of dealing with the wolf such as guard dogs, donkeys, mules and special flagging and fencing. To those of you who are willing to try these methods my hat goes off to you. It is apparent that you care as much about our environment as you do your own property and livestock. Perhaps others will follow in your footsteps.
    I live in this part of Minnesota because I have a strong desire to be closer to nature. Living in and with nature comes with a certain inherent risk to myself and the pets and livestock in my care. This is a risk I am willing to take; it's a small price to pay for all of the benefits I receive. Nature is not limited to the trophy size deer, plump ducks and cuddly creatures. Nature is also the amazing wolves, elusive mountain lions and powerful bear. Man is not meant to be the only predator that walks this earth. If some disagree with this thinking perhaps they would be better suited living in the metro areas of our cities.
    This is just my opinion. My intention is not to be belittle others or to say they are wrong. In this country we are all entitled to our opinion. My purpose for writing this is simply to request that we do what is truly best for our wildlife and the environment that we are blessed to be a part of.     Known to Biologists as "M56", the male wolverine who wandered solo from Wyoming to Colorado 18 months ago, has survived — inspiring state officials to explore a formal reintroduction of 30 more of his kind.
    A cigar-size radio transmitter sewn into M56's belly still sends signals indicating healthy hunting and scavenging. State wildlife managers say citizens also have reported sightings, confirmed with aerial surveillance.

    But Colorado ski area operators, uneasy after state reintroduction of threatened lynx, are bristling at the prospect of more wild predators with protected status near ski slopes.
    "We think the timing is very, very wrong," Colorado Ski Country USA president Melanie Mills said. "Why the rush?"Let's be thoughtful about this and make sure there are budget dollars available for a decade to collect the kind of data on the animal you need before you put (wolverines) on the ground," Mills said."That way you don't put land users in the position of having restrictions put on land use that are not based on science," she said.The fear, she said, is that ski-resort expansion on federal land, and even existing operations, could be restricted if the government embraces wolverines.
    A draft state plan considers importing 30 to 40 wolverines starting in 2012.Federal biologists recently determined that wolverines face extinction and need protection to survive. A future designation under the Endangered Species Act almost certainly would include Colorado, which offers an estimated 8 million acres of the high, rugged terrain that wolverines need.
    Less than 1 percent of that terrain has been leased to ski areas, Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Theo Stein said.
    State wildlife managers who ran the $3 million project that successfully brought back lynx now know enough to be far more efficient reintroducing wolverines, Stein said. State officials would press federal officials for an agreement that ensures ranchers and ski operators wouldn't be hurt, he said."We need everybody to be comfortable," Stein said. "The problems are going to be minimal. This is a pretty hardy animal. It doesn't need a lot of protection."
    Federal studies estimate 250 wolverines live in the lower 48 states.
    Defenders of Wildlife is poised to help fund a Colorado wolverine project, said Dave Gaillard, that advocacy group's regional representative.
    "I don't blame (ski areas) for worrying, but they do not need to worry," Gaillard said. "There's a lot more habitat out there for wolverines than what ski areas currently occupy."
    Males need 200 to 600 square miles to range. Females need 55 to 150 square miles.
    Spotted in the spring of 2009, M56 apparently has ranged between the northern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park and the Collegiate Mountains west of Fairplay.
    Last week when Denver resident Terra Maurer, 28, was out looking for a Christmas tree near Fairplay, she saw something fiercer than a marmot that she contends was a wolverine.
    Her 45-pound cattle dog, Dingo, found it and tried to grab it around its neck, Maurer said."It looked like a squashed beaver, but it was big and had long claws. It was hissing and it smelled like a skunk," she said. "From now on, when we go up there, I'm keeping my dog on a leash."

    Utah bill to delist wolves fails in Senate

    The first of three U.S. Senate bills attempting to remove wolves from endangered species protection failed Tuesday.With time ticking down in the lame-duck Congress, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, along with Idaho cosponsors Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch, also both Republicans, bypassed the committee process by requesting a unanimous consent agreement on Senate Bill 3919, which would have taken it to the floor and limited debate.The gamble was that a single "no" vote could block the bill, and one was provided by Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md.
    Senate Bill 3919 basically said that no federal protections for wolves would be enforced. Hatch introduced the bill at the end of September and it was referred to the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works. 
    Speaking from the floor, both Risch and Crapo said the number of wolves in Idaho has exceeded the number established for recovery."Unfortunately, and despite their recovery, we have not been able to return management of wolves to the states, due to litigation and the inflexibility of the Endangered Species Act," Crapo said. "In the meantime, large increases in wolf populations are resulting in substantial harm to our big-game herds and domestic livestock."--minimum numbers achieved does not mean that is the maximum that should be allowed to roam free and expand further into the Rockies--Senator Hatch sees wildlife management as if it was livestock management of domestic pigs or goats....WRONG Sen.Hatch and all of your patrons!--blogger Rick
    Cardin suggested he would support a compromise pushed by Montana lawmakers and the administration that would limit the scope of the bill to include only wolves in the Northern Rockies.But Crapo said that proposal was unacceptable because it would have forced Idaho to change the way it manages the animals.
    The push to delist has been led mostly by Republicans, but not all Republicans support delisting.     A number of wildlife groups were not surprised at the outcome, but they were relieved."This was one of the worst of the bills out there, so we're relieved it didn't pass," said Suzanne Stone of the Defenders of Wildlife.Garrick Dutcher of Ketchum-based Living with Wolves said no wolf-related emergency exists. Neither threats to elk populations nor the levels of livestock losses suffered by ranchers warrant legislative intervention, Dutcher said.This is borne out by state agency studies. In Idaho, wolves appear to affect elk population objectives in two of 29 management areas while 23 are at or above objectives. State wildlife officials maintain that the state's growing wolf population poses a heightened threat to those populations though.Elk populations in Montana have grown by 20 percent in the past five years. In Wyoming, the elk population is 50 percent above objective. 
    "Legislatively delisting wolves and allowing politics rather than science to determine the status of a species undermines the Endangered Species Act, setting a dangerous precedent for all imperiled species in the future," Dutcher said.

    Conservationists seek to expand wolf range across U.S.

    SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A wildlife conservation group on Tuesday put the government on notice that it would sue to restore wolves across the United States, far beyond a range now limited mostly to Alaska, the Rockies and the Great Lakes.The move by the Center for Biological Diversity, based in Tucson, Arizona, marks the latest twist in a long and heated battle over federal protections for wolf populations first established in 1978.That fight has centered recently in the Northern Rocky Mountains, where wolves have recovered so well that Montana, Idaho and Wyoming want the Obama administration to remove them from the Endangered Species List.Rather than remove protections, or focus on protecting them only in certain regions, the Center said it was long overdue for the federal government to develop a national plan."Wolves are an integral part of this country's natural history and need a national recovery plan now," said Noah Greenwald, the Center's endangered species program director.He said federal recovery efforts for wolves under the Interior Department's U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have focused on just 5 percent of wolves' historic range in the continental United States.--Lets getr this done!--blogger Rick

    With suitable habitat still available in mountains, forests and other back-country areas across the country, recovery plans should be put in place from coast to coast, including California, the Great Plains and New England, Greenwald said.The group filed a formal notice of intent to sue with the Interior Department on Tuesday seeking a nationwide recovery plan. Interior Department spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff declined comment.

    Once abundant across most of North America, wolves were hunted, trapped and poisoned to near extinction in much of the continental United States by the 1930s under a government-sponsored eradication program. Decades later, biologists recognized wolves had an essential role to play in ecosystems as a predator.While Endangered Species Act Protection was extended to wolves in the 1970s, recovery efforts have centered on the Rockies, the Great Lakes and the Southwest.Reestablishment of wolf packs has been especially controversial in the Rockies, where ranchers and hunters -- both powerful political forces in the West -- say wolves are preying on livestock and big game animals.

    "The service arrived at the 2008 decision to list the polar bear as 'threatened' following careful analysis of the best scientific information, as required by the ESA," said acting service director Rowan Gould.In the memorandum filed with the Court today, Fish and Wildlife explained how its biologists had concluded in 2008 that the polar bear was not facing sudden and catastrophic threats, was still a widespread species that had not been restricted to a critically small range or critically low numbers, and was not suffering ongoing major reductions in numbers, range, or both.The decision stopped short of declaring the bears "endangered," a move that would increase protections and make oil and gas exploration more difficult.

    If an abundance of mature male Elk help ensure healthier offspring and allow younger males more time in to grow to maturity..............does this also correlate to it being wise to not cull adult male wolves, coyotes , bears and cougars?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,We know that human hunting and trapping result in fewer adults on the gound..........promotes juveniles to leadership roles before being ready to deal effectively................leads to aberrant behaviors with humans............perhaps less predator hunting seasons will reduce human/predator negative interactions by allowing younger males to grow to maturity......................allowing the predators to gain the wisdom they need to minimize conflicts

    Elk Reproduction Improved With Mature Bulls

    Large, mature animals are symbols of excellent habitat and sound wildlife management. They are also indicative of a natural age structure that fosters normal reproduction and thus a productive population. So suggests research in Oregon that demonstrates mature bull elk are valuable to the reproductive health of elk herds.
    Scientists from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the United States Forest Service studied an enclosed elk herd in a research area of nearly 20,000 acres. The objective was to investigate the effect of bull age on pregnancy rates and breeding dates of cow elk. During two successive five-year periods, about 400 cow elk were exposed to a cohort of bulls that began each period as yearlings and ended as 5 year-olds. About 30 cow elk were harvested each December, enabling scientists to determine if each cow was pregnant and the date she was bred.
    The proportion of female elk that were pregnant was high in all years, showing that bulls of any age can successfully breed. The authors noted, however, that in the two years in which yearling bulls were breeding, nutritional conditions were exceptionally good, and it is possible that with average or poor conditions, yearling bulls may not have been as effective.
    Conception date was strongly influenced by the age of breeding bulls. Average conception dates were 2 weeks earlier when breeding was done by five year-old bulls compared to yearling bulls. The first conceptions occurred in early September, regardless of bull age, but most breeding was completed around October 1 when five-year old bulls were breeding, but not until late October when yearling bulls were breeding.
    What do these results mean? Mature bulls appear to be more efficient breeders than young bulls, which has several implications. 
    • Shorter breeding periods mean that most calves are born about the same time. Many prey species rely on synchronous births to swamp predators and thus reduce the effect of predation on survival of young. 
    • Earlier conception results in earlier birth dates, thereby providing calves more time to grow before winter. The additional growth may increase their survival during winter. 
    • Breeding can be stressful to male elk and potentially lower their survival. Young males may be especially susceptible because they typically are in poorer condition coming into the rut than mature males. When there are mature males in the herd, young males may not even try to breed, which enables them to maintain their body condition and improves their survival. High survival of young males means more mature, large males in future years.
    • Presence of trophy class bull elk is indicative of management that promotes a natural age structure, resulting in breeding patterns that are beneficial to the elk population.

    Potential Interactions Between Bears & Wolves

    With the reintroduction of gray wolves (Canis lupus) to Yellowstone National Park (YNP), much interest has been shown regarding the effects of a restored wolf population on both grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) and black bears (Ursus americanus). Grizzly bears, black bears, and gray wolves have historically coexisted in much of the same range throughout a large portion of North America (Brown 1993).

    Most interactions between the three species involve food sources and are usually characterized by mutual avoidance (Servheen and Knight 1990). The behavior of bears and wolves during interactions with each other are dependent upon many variables such as age, sex and reproductive status, prey availability, hunger and aggressiveness, numbers of animals, and previous experience in interacting with the other species (Servheen and Knight 1990). Most serious interactions between the species occur around wolf dens (Peterson et al. 1984). A wolf pack in Alaska was observed keeping a sow brown bear with yearlings at bay and eventually driving them away from the den site. The same pack was also observed driving a large, male brown bear away from the den site (Mech 1981). These bears were attracted by a recent wolf kill and ventured too close to the wolf den. From 1966 to 1974, Haber (1987) recorded 36 wolf-brown bear interactions in wolf pack territories in Denali National Park. Of the 36 interactions, 19 took place at ungulate carcasses in which wolves "won" 9 of the 19. Seventeen of the interactions were not at carcasses. In those cases, wolves harassed the bears or tried to take cubs, and the bears retreated. Steve Fritts (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service) collected 70 unpublished accounts of bear-wolf interactions (Servheen and Knight 1990). The results showed no negative trends for wolves or bears due to these interactions. Few instances of direct mortality to either species have been documented. Instances of wolves killing bears and bears killing wolves have been reported, but such events are rare and considered the exception. According to Mech (1981), wolves sometimes kill bears, but likely only young, old, or otherwise weakened bears. Paquet and Carbyn (1986) reported three cases of wolves digging up and killing cubs of hibernating black bears in Riding Mountain National Park in Manitoba, Canada but thought it was not a common occurrence as over 2000 wolf scats in the area did not contain any evidence of bear remains. Bears will also occasionally kill wolves as Joslin (1966), and Pimlott et al. (1969) reported in Ontario, Canada. In both instances, black bears were responsible for the deaths of individual wolves. According to Joslin (1966), a black bear killed a female wolf protecting her pups at a den site. In general, most reported interactions are stand-offs with serious confrontations taking place in defense of food or young.

    Wolves prey on ungulates year-round while bears feed on ungulates primarily as winter-killed carcasses and ungulate calves in spring, and weakened or injured male ungulates during the fall rut (Mattson et al. 1991). Grasses, sedges, forbs, berries, nuts, and roots comprise a large portion of a bear's diet throughout the year. After den emergence, both black bears and grizzly bears scavenge winter-killed carcasses. The availability of fewer early-winter ungulate carcasses to bears in the spring, due to wolf populations, would be little change from the present situation (Weaver 1986). Most early-winter ungulate carcasses in YNP are already consumed by coyotes before bears emerge from their dens (Mattson and Knight 1992). Weaver (1986) suggested bears may actually benefit from wolves inhabiting the park. Wolves prey on ungulates year-round, and because bears readily displace wolves from their kills, bears may find more ungulate carcasses during a larger portion of the year. This would provide bears a more reliable source of useful nutrients from July through October. If a bear wants a wolf-kill, the wolves will try to defend it, but they usually fail to chase the bear away (Mech 1981). Murie (1981) witnessed single, adult bears usurping carcasses from as many as 5 wolves. In the Soviet Far East, there is no competition between bears and wolves due to the high biomass of prey species. There are more than 250 wild ungulates/1 wolf in the Soviet Far East (Servheen and Knight 1990). Yellowstone National Park also has an extremely high biomass of ungulates. With a restored population of 100 wolves, the wolf to ungulate ratio would be approximately 225 ungulates/1 wolf in the winter and 378 ungulates/1 wolf in the summer (Singer 1990a). At these high ungulate densities, we would predict that, similar to the Soviet Far East, bears and wolves would coexist with few problems (D. Smith, Natl. Park Serv., Pers. Commun.).

    So far in YNP, 5 of 14 wolf-kills ground-checked by biologists have had evidence of grizzly bear activity (D. Smith, Natl. Park Serv., Pers. Commun.). A grizzly bear was observed the day after a wolf-kill was made and possibly moved the wolves away as they were no longer in the area. In another instance, three wolves (alpha male, alpha female, and yearling male) were bedded down 50 meters from a fresh wolf-kill while a grizzly bear fed on the carcass. The wolves had been feeding on the carcass prior to the bear's arrival but relinquished the kill to the bear. Bears have undoubtedly visited, and possibly made use of, other wolf-kills in YNP. In an instance not involving a carcass, a sow and two-2-year-old grizzly bears were observed chasing, and being chased by, five wolves and gradually caused the wolf pack to vacate their day beds and move about 250 yards away; the sow was grazing nearby while the 2-year-olds interacted with the wolves (S. Consolo Murphy, Natl. Park Serv., Pers. Commun.). Neither the bears nor the wolves were injured during the interaction. Some observers thought it was actually a playful intreaction between the species. These examples of interactions between bears and wolves in YNP further support the theory that bears and wolves can coexist without adversely affecting each other (D. Smith, Natl. Park Serv., Pers. Commun.).

    In summary, a restored gray wolf population in YNP would probably have little, if any, effect on the grizzly bear and black bear populations and vice-versa. With the exception of encounters near carcasses and wolf dens, most bear-wolf interactions could be classified as non-confrontational with no injuries occurring to either species involved. Observations to date suggest bears may actually be benefitting from the presence of wolves by usurping wolf-kills.

    WCC Home to Mexican Wolf Breeding  in 2010!

    In 2010, there will be only three breeding pairs of Mexican gray wolves in the U.S. Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP), and the most important of those pairs will be living - and hopefully having pups -- at the WCC!"F810, who has been living 'solo' at the WCC for the past several months, is the #1-ranked female in the U.S.," says WCC curator, Rebecca Bose, who recently returned from the annual Mexican gray wolf SSP meeting in Creel, Mexico.  "This Fall she will be joined in her enclosure by M691 from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago."  Not only that, but this pair of wolves and their progeny will be the "understudy" for another pair that is currently slated for release into the wild this Spring.  "If, for any reason, that pair cannot be released," explains Bose, "F810 and her mate will be the ones to go instead!"

    But that's not the only news to come out of the meeting.  Long-time WCC residents (and unsuccessful breeders) M575 and F516 will be trading places with three young brothers, M804, M805, and M807, from The Oklahoma City Zoological Park - collectively ranked the #1 males in the U.S.  The Oklahoma facility felt that these three were outgrowing their enclosure, and were eager to trade them for an older, non-breeding pair.  The three young studs are, as their numbers imply, F810's long-lost brothers, so this is a family reunion of sorts!  They were born at the Wild Canid Science and Research Center in St. Louis, and the SSP Program is eager to get them away from interaction with people, so that they can be bred and reintroduced to the wild in the not-too-distant future (at six years old they are ripe for romance!)The WCC will also be welcoming F749 from the Servilletta pre-release facility in New Mexico - currently ranked as the #7 female in the U.S.  She has already bred successfully twice, but her facility was becoming overcrowded, and she needed a temporary home.  "We will put her in a pen adjacent to the three brothers so that they can check each other out, and, if they get along, will allow them to comingle later in the Fall," explains Bose.  "Then we will separate them during the Winter breeding season, and put them back together in the Spring." 
    For this breeding season, a team from the St. Louis Zoo will be traveling to the WCC  to collect semen from 6 important males - including the pups born at the WCC on Earth Day 2008.  "It is facilities like the Wolf Conservation Center that make the whole SSP program work," raved Maggie Dwire, SSP Program Biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at one of the sessions of the annual meeting.

    Wolf interaction with other Predators


    Wolves interact with other animals of the wild in many defferent ways. Here are some examples as well as information on each different kinds of predators that can be seen in a wolf habbitat. Some information was used here: http://www.ualberta.ca/~jzgurski/wild.html






    Wolves and bears can coexist peacefully and often avoid each other. However, wolf-bear interactions can be quite violent. Grizzly bears will sometimes dig up, kill, and eat wolf pups. As a result, wolf packs will attempt to drive away grizzly bears that get close to the dens where wolf pups are living. Wolves may even attack, and have been known to kill, a grizzly bear that gets too close to the den. Wolves and grizzly bears have been seen fighting over animal carcasses from helicopters in Alaska.
    Bears will scavenge off of kills made by wolves, and they may try to drive a wolf or a few wolves off of a kill. Wolves can be quite aggressive towards black bears. There are records of wolves preying on black bears, and wolves have been known to kill and eat hibernating bears. Wolves will also attack black bear cubs when the mother bear cannot get to them and hurry them up a tree fast enough. Black bears will also occasionally kill wolf cubs



    Professor Emeritus of Environemental Science at the University of Calgary, Val Geist, reaching some very unfavorable conclusions(in my opinion) about the need for INTENSE PREDATOR CONTROL as the only way human animals and wolves, cougars and bears can co-exist on our planet................Professor Geist is learned and articulate and makes some provocative statements based on his interpretation of the facts...............He feels that most of his peer Scientists are living in a fairy tale world feeling that predators are not a threat to us................his claims resonate much of what layman ranchers, slob hunters and other anti predator groups are vocal about when they push ferociously for the minimum number of wolves, bears and cougars to exist in the USA.................This blog is here to examine all perspectives.............I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from Professor Geist but will continue to publish what he sends me on this subject..............Let us hear from all points of view and hopefully forge collaborations that will indeed see North Americia re-wilded with more than just the bare minimum number of animals of any given species.....................

    Large predators: them and us!

    We pay close attention to large predators. We do so because we evolved as prey. It was our ancient fate to be killed and eaten, and our primary goal to escape such. Our instincts are still shaped that way.
     There is thus a reason why the bloody carnage on our highways is a mere statistic, but the mauling of a person by a grizzly is news. It's not only that so many fossilized remains of our ancient ancestors are meals consumed by large predators in secluded caves or rock niches, but also that we speciated like large herbivores. That is, our pattern and timing of forming species, of adapting to landscapes, mimics and coincides with that of deer, antelope or cattle, but not that of large carnivores. And that despite our fondness for meat, despite "man the hunter", and despite the fact that at least on species of humans, Neanderthal man, grew into a super predator.

    Large herbivores readily form new species and show a pattern of strong speciation from the equator to the poles, terminating in the cold, glaciated latitudes as "grotesque ice age giants". Large predators do not. They evolve no grotesque ice age giants comparable to the woolly mammoths among elephants, or the massive-antlered giant deer among deer, the giant sheep, or anything else for that matter as grotesque as ourselves. Is there a more grotesque animal than man?  And we did it twice, once as Neanderthal and once as Modern Man. Moreover, herbivores readily form dwarf species under poor ecological conditions such as in rainforests, deserts or predator-free oceanic islands, and they differentiate rapidly into new subspecies as they disperse geographically into new habitats. Predators form no dwarfs, on islands or otherwise. Nor do they segregate sharply into swarms of regional subspecies. Large herbivores do that - and so do humans. Also, our bursts of speciation coincide in time with those of African antelope.

    Humans grow small canine teeth, not the large combat-canines typical of apes. Canine reduction is a signature of a common anti-predator adaptation, called the "selfish herd". In such unrelated individuals cluster together in the open as protection against predation. Herbivores form "selfish herds", predators do not. Herbivores may "evolve away" huge combat-canines, as shown not only by us, but by deer, horses, rhinos and half a dozen extinct families of large mammalian plant eaters. Carnivores reduce no canines!
     Our ancient herbivore root is still reflected in our taste preferences, for when we eat meat we flavor it liberally with plant poisons (pepper, chili, sage, thyme, curry etc). Apparently meat does not really taste "good" till it tastes of  "plant"! We also have the herbivore's craving for salt. So, watch what you reach for next time you get a sizzling steak!

    While we may have evolved as hunters, we did not evolve like predators.
     We have a very special relationship to large predators because of all the primates we are the only species that is able to survive large predators on the ground, away from trees. All other primates are tied to trees to escape predation. We alone can face predators on the ground day or night and we have done so despite being all but blind at night, despite snoring sleepers, crying babies or lusty lovers, or all that bone debris we collected in our campsite from scavenging and hunting. And we did this despite being loaded down with babies or with game we hunted. And we did this for over two million years. And without the ability to defy large predators on the ground there would have been no human dispersal into the treeless steppe where so may of our attributes were formed, there would have been no dispersal "out of Africa" or the incredible phenomenon of human civilization we currently experience.

    Without being able to survive large predators on the ground we would never have tapped into the huge protein biomass of large herbivores. There would never have been "man the hunter". Moreover, a species can only be as abundant as the amount of protein in its food. Gorillas can never outnumber humans, as the protein supply in their plant food is very limited. There is excitement in anthropology about the great leap forward by humans globally about 40,000 years ago, and there is indeed much to be excited about. However, the miracle of human evolution began about two and a half million years ago at the edge of the African savannah were the trees give way to the treeless thorn-steppe, when our first ancestors, small, weak, defenseless and blind in the darkness outwitted large predators on the ground. Surrounded by nocturnally active lions, leopards, hyenas and saber-toothed cats they lived to see the sun rise. From then on hominids began to loose the morphological adaptations in our shoulder girdle for climbing, although we are still pretty good at it, as I can vouch for personally, having been treed by a grizzly bear. Developing a security strategy radically different from that of other large apes was the first step towards becoming human.

    We are great killers, of course, but note: we do not kill like predators with tooth and claws. We kill with tools specialized as weapons. That is unique. And so is the mental and emotional psychic structure that flows from that. With weapon in hand we are brave, daring, dangerous. Without it we may be not. And predators sense that. United with others in bravery we become frightening, especially since we can do something no other primate can. We can mimic sounds and adjust such to the occasion. We can roar, growl and scream, and match our voices to the occasion, to the predator confronted. And mimicking sound is the biological root of language and music. It came first, courtesy predation .It helps being big and black. Large herbivores that confront predators are notoriously big and black! And Homo erectus, our parent species, was as big or bigger than we are and almost certainly as black as any African today.

    Large predators are hypochondriacs – and need to be! They cannot afford wounding as it decreases their efficiency in hunting, and may also trigger an attack by a pack member followed by a cannibalistic feast. A realistic vocal threat, consequently, impresses, even more so a blow with a weapon, but also the touch of thorns. African predators are very "thorn-shy" as we now know from some beautiful experiments. They avoid thorns. And that's the secret to nightly survival: a thorn covered ground-nest. It helps to reinforce such with a growl, and if worst comes to worst with a sharp jab with a stick. However, the ability to form a covered thorn nest on the ground, a "booma", requires a long history of building tree-nests in ever smaller savannah trees, till such formed a part of dense thorn bushes. It requires beyond that considerable manual and tool-using skills to build a sturdy, densely-thorned shelter. It requires close observation of elders and visual mimicry to succeed, which also came courtesy of predation.  The rise of humanity depended first and foremost on survival in sea of large, hungry African predators - in the absence of trees.

    It affected our psyche. During the day, one needs firm discipline when sighting a predator, as running away is suicidal! We cannot outrun predators! One must fake supreme fearlessness, especially when "man the hunter" bagged and carried home a prey. How does one discourage hungry predators at that time, as predators readily abrogate prey from one another? There would have been no "Man the Hunter" without an ability to successfully defend the prey we killed and brought home without a string of predators following! And we had to be good enough at intimidating predators so that women and children could go out foraging. And we had to be good enough to spook off predators despite meat and bones at the campsite at night.

    Enter big brain, enter "planning" based on foresight, shared experiences and imagination.  One must use one's experience, as well as that of others, to minimize encounters with predators. One learns to avoid times and spaces where predators congregate and cannot be readily defeated, and one needs to pass this on to family. One needs to exploit opportunities to chase away a predator, and teach it to do likewise next time. The next step is to develop systematic harassment and punishment of predators so as to instill in them an aversion to anything human. The next step is to know when to systematically kill their helpless young so as to keep down their numbers. All this is still practiced in Africa and elsewhere, and it has been effective enough as over two million years of human history demonstrates. We did not escape being prey, we merely changed priority. We went form being a tasty, defenseless morsel, to a nasty creature of very low priority, in fact, the last in line. And that, given a rich array of prey species, is not all that bad! We thus became a prey that was smarter than the predators, which happens to be unique! Normally, it's the other way around!

    There have been failures, even massive ones!  When our lineage came "out of Africa" it spread westward along the coast of Asia and colonized Australia, repeatedly, some 60,000 years ago. That could only have been done by people possessing boat technology, and it happened quite rapidly. And then it took almost 50,000 years before North America was colonized! What prevented us from entering North America in that enormous time span? Humans even entered South America before North America, judging from the antiquity of archaeological dates. The undisputed fact is that human colonization coincided with the collapse of the unique North American native megafauna beginning about 12,900 years ago. As long as North America's native megafauna remained intact all through the late Pleistocene, there was no human settlement of North America. However, once the megafauna crumbled there were repeated humans entries. Moreover, other members of the Siberian fauna also moved into the ecological vacuum here, such as grizzly bear, gray wolf, wolverine, elk and moose.

    How could this be? North America's megafauna differed substantially from that of Eurasia and Africa. It was characterized by a multitude of highly specialized, often gigantic predators and prey. Moreover, the fossil record shows a surprising amount of crushed, broken, but healed bones in the predators, as well as excessive wear and breakage of teeth. Injuries in current African predators are minimal by comparison. North American native predators were thus confronted by herbivores that were exceedingly able to defend themselves. Not only the broken bones, but the very specializations of the predators speak of the demanding life they experienced. So do the extreme anti-predator specializations of the herbivores. North America during the Pleistocene was thus a predator hell-hole compared to Eurasia or Africa! There was a predacious bear about seven feet at the shoulder, the short-faced bear, Arctodus simus.  And it was assertive and not very clever, as its numerous remains in natural trap sites testify to. If a camel or horse fell down a natural hole, all sort of short-faced bears jumped in after - and perished! Grizzly bears and black bears did not do that! There was the common lion, only it was twice the mass of the African one. So was the American cheetah, compared to the Old World species. There were three species of short-faced bears, there were dire wolves larger than gray wolves, there were massive saber-toothed tigers and large, elegant, speedy dirk-toothed cats and large panthers, as well as black bears, cougar, red wolf and large coyotes. Life was hard for these predators, and they were all too willing to take risks for a meal, as sadly testified to not only in natural trap caves, but also the tar pits at Rancho la Brea.

    If you were to land on the shores of North America, spear in hand, what would you do when those big, assertive predators approached you for a closer look? And how would you hunt the scarce, highly alert gigantic prey? The herbivores were not only highly specialized in evading predation, but their organs of food acquisition and processing remained exceedingly primitive. That means that the fierce predation kept them way below the potential carrying capacity of the land, so that they were able to feed only on the best, most digestible, low-fiber vegetation. There was simply no selection for more efficient feeding organs. And that means that prey populations were kept at very low density. And if you were able to kill a large herbivore, how would you defend it against these diverse, huge predators?

    Our abilities to deal with African and Eurasian predators were thus likely much too limited to deal with the full array of native North American predators. They kept the continent free of humans for nearly 50,000 years, till – for reasons still disputed – America's megafauna declined, and over about 6000 years went largely extinct. Even then the increase in humans, as tracked by the number of hearth discovered per 1000 years, increases very slow. Moreover, it is inversely related to the number of genera of megafauna still alive. It thus took some 6,000 years of hard, very dangerous living by human colonizers to create in North America a landscape reasonably safe for people.

    The few remaining native American species show to this day the predation pressure of the past. White-tailed deer, great experts at hiding and rapid escapes are totally incompetent food competitors, and do very poorly in the presence of Old World deer – which are food competitors! Ditto for mule deer and elk. Pronghorn still run faster than anything on Earth! And native predators such as black bear, cougar, coyotes and raccoons are thriving in our presence, compared their Siberian counterparts which migrated into North America in the Recent, the grizzly bear, gray wolf and wolverine. The Americans are very adaptable, the ex-Siberians are not. It's about the ex-Siberians we happen to worry most.

    We may be the clever, industrious prey that turned the table on carnivores, but our relationship to large predators has remained precarious. Our ability to co-exist depends on us exploiting their fears - and woe if they call our bluff! The man-killing lions of Tsavo are but one example of predators learning how easy it is to hunt man as prey. Jim Corbet's tales of man-eating leopards and tigers, or of lions preying on modern-day refugees in Krueger National Park or Somalia are others. Native people had quite sophisticated means of keeping safe from predators, but ultimately made recourse to killing offending predators should one transgress against humans. Still, high-density populations of big grizzly bear in California kept native people out of productive low-land sites, till Spaniards killed off the grizzlies. On the Pacific coast natives designated certain salmon streams for the use of bears and harassed such away from others. In Greenland early this century areas occupied by wolves were free of native people, and attempts to provision weather stations by dogsled failed because of wolf attacks. I was told that traditionally wolves were kept down in numbers by destroying dens, a method praised as most effective in Russia.

    The history of wolves is deeply troubling, even though to all appearances grizzly bears, black bears and cougars are more dangerous having killed far more people in recent North America. In order to understand what wolves can do, provided the conditions are right, we have to go to Eurasia. It's conditions that count! We must know these well as we have already enacted legislation here and in the European union that are based on false biological premises. And such arose from errors in scholarship. And we must know these errors, as the prestige of science and scholarship are again and again invoked to push flawed conclusions about wolves as well as flawed legislation. The problem in North America is that specialists in wolf biology did not recognize how to use historical Eurasian information about wolves, but dismissed such as irrelevant to an understanding of wolves. They equated all such information as a result of ignorance about and malice towards wolves by an ignorant populous. It escaped them that as scientists they were ill equipped to research such matters, as this field of study resides squarely in the academic domain of history.

    We can know historically of the peoples' plight through the centuries only indirectly as we are dealing in Europe and Asia largely with illiterate populations. Illiterate people cannot leave first-hand accounts of their troubles! They can at best convey their concerns to their masters. Consequently, we have to look for summaries of their problems, be it in church records or administrative accounts. Unfortunately, tracing church records or administrative accounts can be less than fruitful as such have been usually burned by the unending warfare of centuries past. This leaves summaries of such matters, as well as the evidence for actions taken by the rulers to deal with large predators, most often with wolves. An example is the detailed encyclopedic work on hunting and wildlife management by Friedrich von Flemming published in Leipzig, Saxony, in 1719 and addressed to his Mighty Sovereign and Master, Friedrich Augusto, King of Poland, followed by a second volume in 1724. It's sobering! The depredation by wolves led in some regions to great efforts on the part of feudal rulers to rid their land of this menace.  The rulers may have been less concerned with plight of their subjects tan with concerned about taxation and the welfare of their wildlife. Miles upon miles of netting were strung to corral wolves. Special horse carriages and sheds were required to transport and house the netting. Several villages at a time were forced to drive wolves and other wildlife into nets. Professional hunters and trappers were employed to trap wolves. However, recurring wars brought back wolves, and when people are helpless, large predators are quick to know and to exploit such logically.

    And it's not only the central European experience that is sobering, so is research into this matter in Russia, Finland, France, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, India and Korea. Tragedy results again and again from political systems that disarmed and disenfranchised its citizen. Wolves exploited that helplessness. Compared to bears, wolves were hated and that with excellent reason. Not only did they destroy livestock in the fields, but they found means and ways to break into stables in villages and kill the precious family cow or sheep indoors. Children are a primary target of wolves. Rabies was not uncommon, and a rabid wolf running amuck biting horses, cattle, people and in modern days machinery in rapid succession was a death angel if there ever was one! The bite by a rabid wolf is lethal and the bitten person died of rabies. A bitten person could only be cured since the rise of modern medicine. Before that any bite by a rabid wolf was a death sentence, and such an animal could bite dozens of people before it was killed or ran off and died.

    Wolf packs came out of the "wilderness" which was detested as source of evil. The frequent wars brought wolf troubles. After the 30 year war in central Europe it took decades before some landscapes were resettles – courtesy wolves. The fairy tale by the brothers Grim of Little Red Riding Hood is thus not based on ignorance and malice towards wolves but on very real and desperate experiences. This experience drove the costly and wearying attempts to exterminate wolves through out the ages right into the last century in Europe. We may decry today the extermination of wolves in the American west, but there was reason for it and modern studies confirm how efficient wolves can become in killing off livestock. And that confirms the European historical experience.  Even in modern times Wolves have been a trouble to disarmed populations and most recently in areas where they are again re-colonizing such as in Finland, Sweden and even modern Germany. Ditto in New Mexico where wolves are legally protected! Historically there is no place where wolves and people have coexisted, except where wolves were kept under strict control and were hunted, and prey was, consequently, abundant. And that's one lesson from the North American experience we need to take very seriously. Modern research has shown that wolves switch to alternative prey species only very slowly, and that they do not target humans as long as there is prey or livestock between them and us. Moreover, wolves targeting humans and urban coyotes targeting children do so in the same manner. Surprising? Hardly! Surprising is only the argument that wolves pose no danger to people, a myth that has killed here highly educated persons that trusted science. It is timely to reassess conservation of large predators and make such safe for them and us. And that will be the subject of a future essay.



    Appreciated and thank you for the dialog..........do 1700 wolves in the northern rockies count as "abundant" or do we need to be more vigilant with livestock practices in allowing more wolves back on the ground?
    There are thousands of coyotes in calif and very few incidents
    Do dead wolves pass on fear of man to offspring??? Or do scared wolves have a better chance of doing so??
    That is my contention that we have a better chance of coesistance when the wolves on the ground are frightened rather than shot and Poisoned
    Thoughts?

    Dear Mr. Meril,

    Thank you for your note. It's not a mater of passion, but of ferreting out relevant evidence that ultimately allows us to conserve predators effectively, while minimizing the dangers and damage to us. My American and Canadian colleagues in mid 20th Century poohood historical information and painted a picture of wolves that is valid, provided wolf numbers are kept low by massive persecution. That was the fate of wolves at that time. I suspect you came across the letter I wrote about this massive, ongoing trapping effort (appended). Wolves act quite different when they are abundant and when prey is scarce. That's something experienced elsewhere historically, but is now emerging also in North America. History is perfectly clear, and redundantly so, that wolves are considered a curse. I was not aware of that history till four years after retirement. Sorry, I am the messenger, not the message! And it's eerie, but history is slowly, but surely repeating itself right now in the west. Does one close one's eyes to that?
